The Lambs took the lead through Kieren Donnelly, who ended up bagging a brace, but a Matt Rush hat-trick for Boreham Wood almost looked to be too much for Tamworth before a late push in stoppage time saw Ben Milnes convert a penalty to level the scores at 3-3 and take a point back to The Lamb Ground.

Peaks said: “It had a bit of everything today.

“Nice to get back to competitive stuff, show everyone how much it means as opposed to friendlies which obviously serve a purpose, but that was a different ball game today.

“It was always going to be a tough game. I’m always realistic at every level of football. For me, if you can win most of your home games and pick up points on the road, you’re going to be in a good position. To come here against one of the fancied teams who were literally minutes away from being in the league above, it was always going to be tough. We had to play well, and we’ve got a point. Overall, really pleased.”

Tamworth have made a number of new signings over the summer, but Peaks was keen to remind both players and supporters about the identity of a Tamworth side.

He said: “For me, it was about morale. To me, today epitomised what we were about.

“There’s a lot of new lads in that dressing room, and they saw what an Andy Peaks/Neil Champelovier team is about. Being organised, being hard to break down. We’re disappointed with a couple of the goals that happened, but, more importantly, being in the game the last few minutes, being hard to beat, putting everything out there, and that’s what we’re all about.

“That’s all I ever ask for. I can deal with mistakes. Yes, they’re disappointing, but players make them. That’s why they’re at the level, but the level they showed, the belief they showed, to go into that extra ten minutes, still get something, that’s brilliant. That’s all I can ever ask for and I think we saw that today. It was good for the new lads to see what we’re all about.”

167 Tamworth fans were in attendance, something which Peaks was pleased with.

He said: “Fans were brilliant. Fans will travel away because they’ll get a group of lads who may not win every week, and we might, at times, underachieve, but they’ll never stop trying. I think, as a fan, you pay your money, you come, and there was more highs than lows last year. Let’s hope there is this year. One thing I can guarantee is they’ll always put a shift in, they’ll all try, and I think that’s all I can ask for. It was brilliant to get the late equaliser down that end of the pitch. They enjoyed it, and it’s the start of another season where we can hopefully keep pleasing people.”
