Academy player Vanylson Silva managed to get onto the scoresheet too, along with Tom McGlinchey, Nathan Tshikuna and a brace from Jake Hutchinson.
Peaks said: “First and foremost, really pleased to win a game of football.
“We did well in this competition last year and want to do well again this year. For the fans, it was probably an exciting game. For us, there was a lot of positives. Disappointing to concede three goals, but they’ve got some very good players, some tricky players, and we conceded goals the wrong side of half time which made it more difficult than it perhaps should’ve been. Overall, I think it was a really good workout. I thought the lads showed a really good attitude, and delighted to win the game.”
Four academy players featured on the bench, but Peaks was only able to bring two of them on to finish the game. Taylor Wyse was substituted on with five minutes remaining, but the final goal went to Silva in the 90th minute as he added Tamworth’s fifth.
Peaks said: “We’ve got some good academy lads, and we’d like to have probably got others on if we could. At 3-0 we perhaps thought we were going to get more on than we managed in the end. It was about winning the game. He got opportunity, done really well, and we’ve got some good players in that group and we’re going to see more of them as the season progresses. Everyone was pleased for him, you could see everyone that was on the pitch went to shake his hand. He’s one of the group who have got a good future in the game, hopefully here.”
Discussing the competition, and his objectives for the season, Peaks said: “We want to win every game of football we play, the National League Cup is no different to anything else, we entered it for a reason.
“Just like the Birmingham Senior Cup last year, if we’re in something, we want to win it. This is a good competition because you get a good workout and they’d got some good players. They threw us some challenges tonight. Some of their boys had been involved with the first team, although they’re young, you could see the ability they’d got. It’s a good challenge, and it gives people who are not playing the chance to get minutes. We want to go as far as we can, and that’s the first win. We want to win every game, tonight’s no different and the other games won’t be any different at all.”
