MATCH PREVIEW: GATESHEAD (A)

MATCH PREVIEW: GATESHEAD (A)

Tamworth FC

Tamworth are back to league action this weekend with some Friday Night Football as they take on Gateshead on Tyneside.

They look to get back to winning ways following the defeat on the road at Carlisle United last weekend that saw the Lambs exit the Emirates FA Cup. Despite Riccardo Calder’s goal, they were unable to secure a replay after two first-half goals from Carlisle.

The Lambs are looking to secure their second victory on the road in the league following a victory at Hartlepool United earlier this month which saw Kieren Donnelly on the scoresheet as Tamworth also picked up a clean sheet at Victoria Park.

The opposition

Gateshead Football Club have been a stalwart of non-league football for a number of seasons now, often a regular fixture at non-league’s top table.

They were formed in 1977 after Gateshead United folded. The new football club replaced them in the Northern Premier League, then the sixth tier, before earning their first promotion with 100 points, in 1983.

They spent the next two decades in either the fifth or the sixth tier before being relegated in 2003. They returned back to the Conference Premier in 2009 and spent ten seasons at the level. Relegation followed, before they regrouped and spent three seasons in the National League North.

Macaulay Langstaff scored 30 goals in the 21/22 season, and helped fire the team back up to the National League, where they have remained since.

Away from the league, they have had plenty of success in the FA Trophy over the years, with the most memorable moment being in 23/24, with their dramatic victory against Solihull Moors after a penalty shootout at Wembley.

DID YOU KNOW: Gateshead's stadium is a multi-purpose venue that has historically been used for several sports including rugby and athletics.

Who’s in the dugout?

Ben Clark was appointed as caretaker manager earlier this month, following the departure of Lee Cattermole after just four months in the role. Clark made all of his career appearances in the North East, with the majority of his games being played for the Heed between 2010 and 2016.

He has also made appearances for Sunderland, Hartlepool United and South Shields.

Peaks Speaks: Gateshead

“The league is the priority. I’ve said that in the last couple of years. We’ve been fortunate and done really well to have some unbelievable cup runs. Them sort of memories stick with you, but we’re not. That’s done and dusted and it’s all about the league now, that’s always been our priority. We’ve got a week of training ready for a real tough game at Gateshead. Again, a lot of travelling so we’ve got to find a way of being fresh when we start the game.”
