Victories against Premier League U21 opposition, including Manchester United, Everton and Burnley, have underlined The Lambs’ consistency as they chase a first piece of silverware since last season’s Birmingham Senior Cup triumph.

That success saw Tamworth defeat Burton Albion 4-1 at the Altair Group Community Stadium, lifting the trophy for the first time since 1969, following previous final defeats in 2000–01 and 2012–13 against Moor Green and West Bromwich Albion respectively.

FC Halifax Town’s National League Cup Run

FC Halifax Town arrive in the West Midlands aiming to secure their first domestic cup success since 2023, when a Jamie Cooke winner earned The Shaymen a 1-0 FA Trophy victory over Gateshead at Wembley.

Managed by Adam Lakeland, Halifax qualified second in Group D after a dramatic 7-6 penalty shootout victory over Newcastle United U21s following a goalless draw in normal time. Had Newcastle scored inside 90 minutes, Halifax would have been eliminated, though the Magpies recorded zero shots on target.

Wins against Middlesbrough U21s and Leeds United U21s, along with a 5-3 penalty shootout victory over Sunderland U21s, also contributed to The Shaymen’s progression to the quarter-final stage.

Head-to-Head

Tamworth have not beaten FC Halifax Town in their last seven meetings, a run stretching back to March 2014.

The Lambs’ last victory over Halifax came in January 2014, when goals in each half secured one of Tamworth’s ten league wins that season, a campaign that ultimately ended in relegation to the Conference North.

The most recent meeting came in late December, when first-half goals from Will Smith and Will Harris sealed a 2-0 away victory for Halifax at the Altair Group Community Stadium. The Shaymen delivered a controlled performance, limiting Tamworth to just one shot on target. One to Watch – Josh Hmami

Tamworth will need to be alert to the threat posed by Josh Hmami, who is enjoying a breakout campaign after signing from King’s Lynn Town last summer.

After recording 16 goal contributions in National League North during the 2024/25 season, the central midfielder has carried that form into Step One football.

In just 25 league appearances for The Shaymen, Hmami has already registered 14 goal contributions, including nine goals from midfield, making him Halifax’s second-highest scorer behind Will Harris. His goalscoring instinct and creative influence place him firmly among the form players in the division.

On the defeat:
“Really disappointed, definitely a winnable game. To come away with nothing is a real sickener. I felt we had chances and enough incidents to get something out of the game, for me there were two absolute definite penalties in the first half alone.”

On Sutton goalkeeper Jack Sims:
“He made some good saves, credit to him. We should have scored and been out of sight, in good areas we have to finish.”

On his half-time message:
“We said at half-time to keep doing what we were doing. They are dangerous on the break and unfortunately we missed a couple of tackles, lost a runner and they’ve scored. We didn’t really recover from that.”

On the National League Cup tie:
“We’ve got plenty of players to rotate the squad. Tonight is a wounder because we had enough chances and possession, but key moments didn’t go our way. We’ve got to dust ourselves down and go again on Tuesday night.”
