MATCH PREVIEW: SUTTON UNITED (H)

Tamworth FC

The Lambs take on the U's at the H.D. Ricketts Community Stadium in one of two Wednesday night clashes in the Enterprise National League.

The opposition

Founded in 1898, Sutton United began playing in the local leagues before progressing into the Athenian League in the early 1920s. The team became a staple of non-league throughout the 20th century, including regular appearances in the Isthmian League and the Conference.

They were one of the first teams in the Conference South that formed in 2004, and then won promotion to the National League in 2015. They achieved a second promotion in five seasons as they secured their first ever Football League status in 2021. Their debut campaign saw them finish eighth, just one point outside the playoffs behind Mansfield Town. After just a handful of seasons, they were relegated back into the National League in 2024.

Sutton United have also had pedigree in cup competitions too, with a famous run to the fifth round of the FA Cup in 2016/17 alongside fellow fifth-tier side Lincoln City.

After starting the Proper Rounds with a nine-goal thriller at Dartford in the First Round, they secured victories against Cheltenham Town, AFC Wimbledon and Leeds United, before a Fifth Round tie at home to Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal, where they lost 2-0.

Who’s in the dugout?

Chris Agutter has been in charge since October 2025. His first game saw a 0-0 draw on the road at Braintree Town. Shortly afterwards, he led the team to a tie against Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup Second Round Proper, where his side fell to a narrow 2-1 defeat.

Agutter also eventually managed to stabilise the side when he came in, with the U’s in danger of relegation for the first half of the season. However, the club eventually recorded a 19th place finish in the National League.

Before taking the reins at Sutton, he had experience at managing Worthing, Hastings Untied and Stevenage academy.

Ones to watch

Temi Babalola and David Ogbonna are the two joint-top scorers for Sutton United, each netting three times this season.

Dan Urpens has assisted four goals in his ten appearances this season.

Peaks Speaks – Sutton United

“There’ll be some changes, that’s guaranteed. I’ve told them that. I want to get people in, still. We need to strengthen; it’s not good enough. I’m looking at it, and we’ll put a team out on Wednesday night. We know we can beat anyone at home if we’re at it, but we can’t defend like that [against Aldershot]. I was expecting more, and to roll over like we did, I questioned some of them. That’s something we need to address, but I know I will get a team that want to play for me and this club.”
