Tamworth Ladies put in a spirited and composed display to earn a well-deserved 1-1 draw at home to high-flying Telford Ladies, denting the visitors’ title hopes in the process.
Coming off the back of a tough defeat to the same opposition two weeks ago, Tamworth showed resilience and quality throughout, matching their opponents stride for stride in an end-to-end encounter.
Telford broke the deadlock in the 10th minute with the first shot on target of the game – a fine strike from just outside the area giving them an early lead. However, Tamworth responded brilliantly and refused to let their heads drop.
Their persistence paid off in the 25th minute. A well-delivered free kick from Daisy Wynn was whipped into the near post, where Ellé Haywood timed her run to perfection and slotted home first time to level the score.
Both teams continued to create chances in an entertaining first half, which ended with the sides locked at 1-1.
The second half picked up right where the first left off, with both teams pushing for a winner. Tamworth saw good opportunities fall to Molly McKinlay, Ellé Haywood, and Marianne Lennon, while at the other end, goalkeeper Harriet Price pulled off a superb save from a Telford free kick to keep the game level.
In the end, a draw was probably the fairest result – a fast-paced, high-quality contest that highlighted the strength of both teams.
Player of the Match
It was another tough decision with standout performances all over the pitch. The defence stood firm, the midfield dictated large parts of the game, and Hannah Cox and Milly Clarke led the line impressively. However, this week’s Player of the Match goes to Maggie Croxall for an outstanding display at full back. Solid defensively, composed on the ball, and constantly turning defence into attack with smart passing – a truly all-round performance.
