After an enforced ‘rest period’ due to the postponement of the Gateshead away trip the previous Friday evening (now Saturday, 07 November) The Lambs returned to the HD Ricketts Community Stadium at The Lamb and welcomed The Iron.
Andy Butler’s Scunthorpe United side came into the game 3rd from bottom with 10 points and one league win in the last six, four points and two places behind Andy Peaks’ squad who had picked up 9 points from their last 18.
Peaks introduced loanee attackingly minded Ramell Carter, on a short term loan from Hull City and Jon Macaulay was given his first league start between the posts.
United got the game underway and Tamworth tried their best to pen them back at the Meadow Street End in the early exchanges and it bore fruit after just four minutes.
An incisive Gabriel Kelly pass down the left to Tom McGlinchey was crossed into the danger area and as Scunthorpe tried to deal with Kieren Donnelly’s header Morgan Roberts rifled it home from 8 yards to the delight of the home faithful (1-0, 4 mins)
The visitors tried to respond quickly as Jordan Richards got onto the end of a cross from the left on seven minutes and drove his angled shot past the left hand post and at the other end two minutes later a driven low cross was nearly met by Roberts from 18 yards but he missed his connection to strike on target.
Tom Handley then sent a delightful long pass from right back into the path of Donnelly on 12 minutes and he got his boot to it on the edge of the area, but couldn’t get enough on it to test Maison Campbell in the United goal.
But there was no stopping him on 14 minutes, glancing home a left wing cross from Teo Kurtaran with a deft header to double The Lambs advantage (2-0, 14 mins)
A foul by Denton on Kurtaran on 19 minutes set the Lam s number 4 up with a deadball on the right wing and earned the United player a booking. From the deadball Carson picked up the scraps and his strike from 18 yards was bundled behind for a corner which was cleared.
The game continued at a fast pace and Scunthorpe were able to get the ball into the Lambs final third on a few occasions without really threatening Macaulay. At the other end, on 27 minutes Kurtaran spotted Campbell slightly out of position and struck right footed from the left channel, curling the ball just over the corner of bar and post.
Joseph Starbuck directed a snap header wide of the mark on the half hour and Richards hit a frustrated low effort from 35 yards soon after which Macaulay was happy to stop with his feet.
Donnelly was released down the left on 36 minutes, advancing into the box in the process and he cut back behind the covering the defender before picking his spot, but it was straight at Campbell and he batted it away from danger to prevent his brace.
A searching right wing cross from Carter in the next move nearly found the head of Tom Parkes in the middle of the area but he was beaten to it by the covering defender. Both players collided leaving captain Will Evans needing treatment on and off the field before he was OK to return to the play.
And on 43 minutes The Lambs extended their lead even further with McGlinchey taking the ball at his feet on the edge of the D before setting himself up for a low finish past Campbell into the bottom left (3-0, 43 mins) prompting a home made sign in the away end to be hung from the hoardings.
Donnelly nearly added a fourth soon after but was denied his second by a combination of Campbell and Denton and it prompted the visitors into action with Alfie Beestin striking from distance into the back of the net to reduce the arrears towards the end of the four added minutes. (3-1, 45+3 mins)
HT: 3-1
Tamworth got the game back underway after the visitors made two changes and they pushed forwards, shouting for a penalty against Hayden Carson when Jean Belehouan went down over his outstretched leg, but the referee was unimpressed.
Substitue Jones forced Macaulay into a low stop off his angled strike on 53 minutes, and from the resulting corner James Norwood got his head to the ball but directed it a foot wide of the far post.
Carter nearly bagged a debut goal with a left footed swing at a cross from Carson on 57 minutes, but it bounced and skipped out just past the right hand upright with Campbell in full flight.
And Donnelly missed out on his second of the game again just shy of the hour, robbing the defence and chipping over the advancing Campbell but also the crossbar in the process.
Macaulay had to react quickly to smother the loose ball after Beestin and then Luke Brennan tried low shots from the edge of the box.
This was quickly followed by a double change for The Lambs with Dan Creaney and Ryan Howley both returning from injury, the former still sporting a protective face mask.
Creaney protested strongly when it seemed his shirt was being removed as he tried to go past the last man on 74 minutes and Donnelly appeared to be wrestled to the ground by Starbuck on the half way line on five minutes later but the officials did not see it their way.
United substitute Jones smashed a right footed shot from the right of the area against the base of the far post on 82 minutes as The Lambs struggled to make clean clearances to prevent The Iron striking. But they were doing enough to protect Macaulay’s goal with Parkes slicing a clearance over his own bar on 85 minutes off a whipped in right wing cross.
The Lambs keeper took a Jones ball into the area at the second attempt in a crowded area on 86 minutes, but Tamworth made certain of the victory in the fourth minute of added time when a through ball out of midfield by Donnelly found McGlinchey and he took it into the box then unselfishly rolled it for Creaney to finish from a yard out (4-1, 90+4 mins)
The Lambs welcome Woking to the HD Ricketts Community Stadium on Saturday in their next Enterprise National League fixture, 3pm kick off.
