Minstermen take the points

Tamworth FC11 Apr - 10:22

but are given a tough test by The Lambs in an end to end encounter

With just two league games to go after this one, The Lambs welcomed top of the table York City to the Altair Group Community Stadium for their next Enterprise National League fixture.
The Minstermen sat on 101 points, 2 points ahead of second placed Rochdale on 99, and being the early kick off, live on DAZN, Stuart Maynard's visiting side could put a little bit of daylight between the two sides should they take all three points.
However, Andy Peaks squad were still mathematically capable of beating the 64 points tally their achieved in their first season back in the top flight and although the game against York City would undoubtedly be a tough one, recent results had continued to prove The Lambs, in 10th before kick off, were a match for anyone.

And so, on a bright and breezy April lunchtime, City kicked off towards the packed out Meadow Street end in the first half and a searching cross from the left by Kitching had to be dealt with by Creaney on the far side, who then headed the long throw behind for the first corner of the game, by the Cross Street entrance but it was took long for Kitching way past the far post and he headed behind and well wide.
Kitching was involved again on 5 with a strong run to the edge of the area, and his right footed angled strike forced Singh into a low stop at his near post.
At the other end Acquaye whipped a left footed cross from the left wing onto the head of Mols but he couldn't direct it to test Male in the Castle End goalmouth.
A clash of heads left Rye needing treatment on 7, and a drop ball restarted play with York maintaining possession until Curley disrupted the flow and sent Lynch free down the left. He cut it back for Creaney on the edge of the box who tried his luck but fired off target too.
Cullinane-Liburd and Newby went toe to toe in Singh's box as the latter tried to get around him for a shot, but the Lambs defender was too strong and nothing came of the half chance, and Pearce found a gap to squeeze behind the Lambs defence on 14 but lost his footing as he tried to strike the ball on the turn, and he showed his predatory instinct getting his boot to a half chance on 15 but put it wide of the right hand post with Singh diving to cover, but possibly beaten had it been on target.
Brookes found space on the York left on 19 to line up a low shot which whistled past the far post and out for a goalkick, and York forced a left sided corner on 22 but over hit it and Hunt wasted the deadball.
Boateng held off Rye to set up Newby with a chance from 12 yards on 23 but his snapshot was off target and The Lambs defence cleared, and as they moved upfield Cockerill-Mollett was upended by Fagan-Wallcott and booked for his troubles.
The visitors were in front on 27 though, when Pearce mopped up the ball at the right hand post, despite the best efforts of the Lambs defence to prevent the initial low ball in from the left, after it came back off the far woodwork and the National League's leading marksman made no mistake from a few yards out (0-1, 27 mins)
Cockerill-Mollett bravely headed the ball away from a Newby cross as Pearce bore down and required treatment on the pitch in the box before leaving the field with the Lambs physio, and when play restarted York continued to press The Lambs back into the final third, forcing a corner off Brookes' volley off Curley on 37.
Another Lambs player had to leave for treatment when Creaney was caught by a challenge on 40, but he was OK to continue and lifted a pass for Mols to run onto in the box on 41 but that was headed away.
When it came back in Mols struck powerfully and low through the crowded box towards the bottom left of Males' goal and it took a last minute intervention from Fagan-Wallcott to prevent the equaliser.
There was confusion when it looked like the referee was booked Fagan-Wallcott again on 44, but Banks was the recipient of the card for a foul on Cockerill-Mollett in front of the home dugout.
Mols was brought down on the right of the area on 45, and Kurtaran whipped the ball in, but no one could get a clear head or boot to it and York dealt with the threat.
Five minutes added time was shown at the end of the first half and Newby connected with a low cross from Hunt on the right but skied his effort over the Meadow Street terrace.
RIley was booked for protesting a foul again Banks on the halfway line on 45+6 and when it came to Banks on the edge of the area he struck cleanly but lifted his shot over the bar too leave the lead a slender one at the break.

HT 0-1

Tamworth made three changes before restarting the game and Acquaye fed Kurtaran in space into the box on 47 but his first time strike was well saved by Male to deny a quick equaliser.
Play switched quickly to the other end and Pearce went through but was fouled by Hollis just on the edge of the area, and a yellow card was shown to the Lambs substitute defender. Hunt took the freekick and made Singh protect his goal with a low save to his left, at the base of the post.
Singh dealt with a long range looping strike from Pearce on 55 and Tonks launched a throw into the area soon after, but it was cleared.
On the hour Acquaye then went through on on one with Male, only to be forced wide and both sides worked hard to break through.
King struck the bar on 65 with a curling effort from the right channel which cannoned back off the woodwork
Bates struck straight at Male on 73 and Kitching did similarly on 75, with Singh grateful for the shot which was straight into his arms.
Lynch found himself with a sight on goal on 85 and beat Male with his low angled shot but also watched it roll past the far post before 6 minutes added time was shown.
And there was just time for Pearce to try one more effort which went through to Singh before the whistle blew.
