Lambs bring a point back from Lincolnshire

Lambs bring a point back from Lincolnshire

Tamworth FC21 Feb - 16:56

as The Pilgrims are prevented from bagging a fifth straight win

After The Lambs midweek exit from the National League Cup, Andy Peaks’ 13th placed side made the trip to Lincolnshire to take on Paul Hurst’s Pilgrims, themselves on the back of a four-game winning run which put them one point and two places ahead in the Enterprise National League although Tamworth had two games in hand.

United got the game underway, with The Lambs kicking towards the open end of the ground, part way through construction of the final side of the Boston Community Stadium.
Both sides started brightly, with Lynch and Mols making forays into the final third, while Hiwula and Maguire combined at the other end and Carson forced a left sided corner off Mols on 6.
It was cleared but only as far as Maguire and he tried to get a shot away in the crowded area but found his way blocked. When the ball was cleared to the halfway line, play had to stop as the referee confirmed the ball was not fully inflated, and a replacement was supplied.
Kurtaran sent an inviting cross from the left into the path of Mols on 9 but he just failed to get his boot on it to take it past Wogan in the home goal, and Lynch was unable to get a shot from the right of the are around the keeper on 11 after a strong run, under pressure from Grimes, and found the side netting.
Tonks was caught by a boot on his shin on 12 and needed treatment on the field before he could get back to his feet and had to leave it as play recommenced.
Pressure from the Pilgrims forced a miskick at the Lambs back on 17, and the ball was eventually scrambled away and Tonks sent a throw into the box from the left on 19, receiving it back off the head of Richards for another go.
The second one was flicked on and hooked away by Carson and on 22, Singh was called into action tipping Digie’s unintentionally goalbound defensive header away for a corner.
Rooney then picked up a booking on 24 for bringing Maher to ground on the halfway line.
On 28 Aboh angled a strike from the left of the box out past the far post, with The Lambs defence sliding in just in case, and on 30 Cursons went down under pressure in the box calling for a penalty but his claims were waved away.
Mols was tripped by Gallagher just outside the D on 32, setting up a deadball with a good sight of the target and although Mols struck the wall, he managed to cut around and force a corner on the right instead.
Mahers’ flagkick was headed away as far as the kick taker, and his return ball was cleared and as Kurtaran went in for a header Hiwula raised his boot and was booked for leaving the Lambs midfielder requiring treatment.
Boston dealt with the resulting freekick in the usual fashion - a hefty clearance.
Fairlamb had to think quickly to boot a chance off the line from Carson and prevent it going in at the far post on 38, and when Tonks blocked the run of Hiwula on 40, The Pilgrims looked to Maguire to load and fire his freekick from just outside the area on the left of the D and he wasn’t far away but curled his effort just wide of the left hand post.
Tonks was unable to cause a problem with his throw on 44, which Grimes headed away, and Lynch was too far in front to capitalise on Maher’s cross which Wogan parried as Lynch passed him.
Two minutes added time was shown at the end of the first half which ended without further incident.

HT: 0-0

Tamworth restarted the game, but despite keeping the ball in the Boston half for the opening exchanges, Wogan’s goal was not threatened. A United corner was pushed away by Singh on 51 and Wogan was called into action when Maher drilled a low ball into the box on 53 which Mols followed in but was beaten to it by the keeper.
A good move downfield by the home side came on 59 when Maguire threaded a pass into the area from the right and it was touched out by Cullinane-Liburd off the toes of Cursons, for a corner, and when Aboh picked the ball up 25 yards out he struck for goal, forcing Singh to catch his on target effort at head height.
Tonks got in the way of a clearance on the halfway line and took a blow to the face, bringing a brief pause while he recovered, and Tamworth continued to push up, but Wogan remained a spectator for the most part.
Teale’s cross from the right wing on 67 was aimed for Cursons but Cullinane-Liburd got there first, and Lynch went to ground on 70 following a push from Maguire so Kurtaran and Maher lined up the deadball but it was cleared as quickly as it had gone into the box.
Lynch smashed a shot from the left of the box into path of a United defender lunging in, on 75 and Fairlamb recycled it amid shouts of handball against the Boston defence which did not sway the referee at all.
Maguire curled a shot onto the roof of the net on 77, and Mols was replaced by Roberts for the remainder of the game.
Tonks tried his luck from the halfway line on 79 but saw it curl high and wide of the mark, and while Donnelly received treatment on 85, for a blow to the head, The Lambs made two more changes with Isichei and Hollis coming on.
Rye cleared the ‘Pilgrims’ stand behind Wogan’s goal on 90 with a shot from distance, and six minutes added time was indicated.
A deep freekick from the left from Hiwula was headed away by the Lambs defence and it seemed increasingly unlikely that either side would find the net before the whistle blew as passes went awry or astray, and it ended goalless.
