Following the midweek FA Trophy victory over Rochdale, Andy Peaks’ Lambs made the clubs longest ever journey for a competitive match, down to Cornwall to face John Askey’s joint bottom club at the Truro City Stadium for the first time. The Lambs had recorded a 2-0 home victory early in the season and would be looking for more of the same ahead of a difficult midweek trip to Wealdstone.
The squad stayed in Plymouth the night before the game and had enjoyed a training session courtesy of Plymouth Marjon University while many Lambs fans made the trip to Newquay and the surrounding areas, enjoying the January sunshine in the process.
Peaks made one change to the eleven that started against Rochdale with Teo Kurtaran replacing Jordan Ponticelli, and new loanee Brandon Forbes – coming in from Norwich City on a month-long loan - took a place on the bench.
Despite some blue skies and bright sunshine above the stadium before kick off, pre-match rain soaked the pitch and the floodlights were needed and the home side kicked off towards the end where the travelling faithful were singing their side on.
Oxlade-Chamberlain whipped a cross in from the right on 3 and Harvey was inches away from connecting at the far post before Hasani forced a corner off Fairlamb, which Riley-Lowe took. The flagkick was flicked on by Harvey and headed away by the Lambs defence but the ball was worked back in again and the same Tinner headed straight at Singh.
A first Lambs corner came on 11, which Acquaye took and although it was half cleared, Bates curled a low cross into the box and it was put away for another corner before Digie could connect, and Kurtaran’s flagkick was defended away.
A pull on Acquaye’s shirt by Oxlade-Chamberlain allowed The Lambs to set a freekick up from 40 yards out and Kurtaran chipped in into the danger area but Stone collected easily and released Joshon-Fisher who sprinted to the other end and a corner resulted which Lynch headed away.
After pulling the ball into the box from the right on 20, Lynch went down needing treatment on the field before the decision was made to make and early change, with Ponticelli replacing him.
Johnson-Fisher cut in and looked for goal from long range but found Mols in his way on 24.
Tonk had his first long throw of the game on 27 but it was headed away and cleared by the home side, who advanced and Oxlade-Chamberlain drilled in a low cross from the right, which Bates headed away from danger at the near post.
There was another stop on 30 when Acquaye also needed treatment on the field returning from the touchline a minute or so later, and the Tinners exerted some pressure on The Lambs without testing Singh.
Harvey was booked on 38 for a touch of frustrated dissent after a foul on Cullinane-Liburd by the corner flag.
Tamworth responded by pushing back up field, and Tonks sent a left sided throw in to the area but he received the ball back off a defensive header, and his ball into the box was caught by Stone.
A short freekick from Tonks to Acquaye on the left wing on 42 saw the latter beat his man and force a corner on the left. Kurtaran’s flagkick got his head to it inside the near post but it was touched away for another corner, which Ponticelli got his head to, and Stone made a superb save to keep it out and prevent The Lambs taking the lead.
Truro looped the ball into Singh’s area on 44 and Charsley nearly made enough contact to control it and set himself up with a strike from 12 yards, but his touch wasn’t quite good enough and the Lambs keeper took it at chest height.
As four minutes added time was shown, Cullinane-Liburd tumbled awkwardly over a City midfielder and needed a moment to recover.
Mols took the ball down and set Ponticelli with a long range effort on 47, but his strike was too high to trouble Stone and as the sun dropped behind the dugout side of the stadium, the half finished goalless.
HT: 0-0
The Lambs made a change at the break with Acquaye going off and Forbes replacing him before restarting the game, with the travelling faithful hoping for the net to ripple in front of them in the second half.
And there was a stoppage soon after the whistle blew, when En-Neyah took a knock and needed treatment but he couldn't continue so City made their first change.
Curley was tripped by sub Palfrey in a central position 35 yards out on 52 and it was cleared for Tonks to take left sided throw which was headed down by Digie and helped on by Ponticelli but Stone dropped to his right and prevented it from creeping over the line.
Mols made headway down the right and pulled it back but Ponticelli was unable to get a clean shot away and Tonks recovered it but the move broke down.
Another Tonks throw, from the right, came on the hour, but Stone plucked it out of the air six yards out and Truro worked the ball down the left, with Johnson-Fisher, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Riley-Lowe all unable to get past Curley.
A clumsy challenge gave City a freekick on the left on 65 which Cullinane-Liburd headed away but Hasani forced Kurtaran to kick it out of play, and the Tonks cleared his lines, handing Oxlade-Chamberlain another long throw which Tonks glanced up and back to Singh.
A deep ball into the corner saw Mols play it off Tinner’s defender Dean for a right sided corner on 69 which Kurtaran sent into the box but it was cleared for a throw on the same side and Tonks tried another throw.
His throw was met in the middle of the area by the head of Mols but it bounced just wide of the near post.
Play switched to the Truro left wing, and a foul gave Riley-Lowe the freekick which he planted into the area and also the hands of Singh.
The balance swung the other way again and a clearance gave Tonks another throw, on the left, but it bounced in the crowded area and out of play past the far post.
The home side came close on 73 but Harvey’s effort from 12 yards whistled past the target with the home crowded holding their collective breaths.
The Lambs made the most of a mistake in the middle of the pitch which allowed Kurtaran to take the ball dow the middle and feed it to Ponticelli. He forced a low stop from Stone and it came back out to Kurtaran who struck similarly and found Stone in no mood to be eaten once again as the home side escaped.
Tonks made way for Roberts with 10 remaining allowing a slight shuffle of the Lambs formation but the home side pressed and a freekick in the right channel from Riley-Lowe resulted in a corner for the Tinners.
Tamworth defended strongly, with Mols vital tackle conceding a corner on 82 and Hasani drilled it low towards the near post for Mols to clear away. However a throw from Oxlade-Chamberlain followed and Dean was shown a straight red as the ball came in for flailing an arm at Mols and making contact in the process.
As the rain started to fall heavily Roberts was tripped 25 yards out and Harrison was booked in the process. Forbes took control of the deadball, in the right channel, and he curled it around the wall forcing Stone to dive to his left and punch it away.
Singh had to leave his area to prevent Johnson-Fisher from getting control of the ball on the right wing on 88 and as the minutes ticked down Kurtaran struck from distance but lifted his shot high and wide of the mark.
Four minutes added time was show at the end of the second half and Tamworth pressed with just Fairlamb and Singh back, and it was a very deep Fairlamb ball into the box on 92 that found Digie, but he couldn’t get his header on target and inside the far post.
After near one twos with Roberts, Kurtaran lofted a cross into the box for Stone to collect, and from the keeper’s clearance the final whistle blew on a goalless points a piece.
