The Iron strike back at Glanford Park

The Iron strike back at Glanford Park

Tamworth FC6 Dec 2025 - 19:31

Lambs are unable to forge a positive result despite taking a first half lead

After the defeat on the road to Carlisle the previous weekend, The Lambs made the somewhat shorter journey into North Lincolnshire to face Andy Butler’s 6th placed Iron side at Glanford Park under the wintry rain.

With the Enterprise National League game kicking off at the later time of 5.30pm due to live coverage on DAZN, Andy Peaks squad came into the game in 13th place, and the Lambs boss made no changes to the side that had started against the Cumbrians as the squad went in search of points in front of another team pushing for a promotion spot at the end of the season urged on by another big home crowd and former United player and guest at the game, Kevin Keegan.

Tamworth in light blue shirts and white shorts kicked off the game attacking the Doncaster Road End of the ground filled with home fans, while Scunthorpe, in claret and blue, would push towards Singh’s goal with the travelling faithful housed in the corner of the opposite AMS Stand.
Ponticelli and Milnes got the ball upfield but it was booted back down for Donkor to deal with and give Singh his first touch as a wall of sound from behind Mahady’s goal travelled down the pitch.
Starbuck found Scales in the right channel on 2 but his chipped cross went out harmlessly past the far post and on 5, as Ponticelli was looking to release Roberts down the right out of midfield, he was tripped but Milne’s freekick was too long and skipped out of play.
Belehouan made a strong run to the edge of the box but found his way blocked by Bates on 10, and neither side was able to get any real purchase on the ball until a foul by Cockerill-Mollett was followed up by a handball by the same player 25 yards out in United’s right channel. The freekick was taken by Westbrook and scrambled away off Digie’s defensive header but Scunthorpe retained the play until a wayward goalkick put the ball out over the halfway line.
Digie had to be quick to take the ball away from the run of Denton over the halfway line on 19 and in their first real attack of the game in the next move, Creaney smashed a shot straight at Mahady from 12 yards after good work by Roberts and Ponticelli down the left to cut the ball back into his path.
At the other end, on 21, Rye slipped and allowed Scales to advance towards the edge of the box with Bates coming to his rescue with a timely challenge to block a potential shot.
The Lambs were forced to clear their lines again on 23 with Digie sliding in to disrupt Sellars-Flemming as he shaped to shoot from the right of the penalty area.
Ponticelli forced Belehouan to concede a right sided corner on 25 and Maher’s flagkick was punched behind for another by the home keeper which was just over the head of Creaney, and Cockerill-Mollett was unable to direct his header on target.
However, the Lambs fans were given something to celebrate when, on 28, Creaney’s mis-hit shot from a Roberts ball in from the right, was bundled past Mahady via a heavy touch from Starbuck, the covering defender, who was awarded the own-goal, to take it past the helpless keeper and it stunned the home faithful behind him (0-1, 28 mins)
From the restart Singh had to be quick out to get in the way of Westbrooke’s attempted lob from 18 yards but he was unable to do anything when Sellars-Flemming broke through into the box and slotted cooly past him from the angle to level the tie (1-1, 32 mins)
United forced a corner on 39, making The Lambs defend again, after a searching cross in from Scales, and there was a clash of Tamworth heads on 40 when Digie and Milnes both went for the same ball, coming in from opposing angles in a bid to get it away from the box. Despite having attention from the physio on the field neither were required to leave the playing area once they had recovered and The Lambs mounted an attack from the drop ball.
Cockerill-Mollett’s throw was cleared and loaded back in by Donkor but Belehouan and Sellars-Flemming countered with the latter being upended for an Iron-clad freekick on the right on 43 which Singh took at height.
Six minutes added time were shown at the end of the first half and Milnes slid in to cut out the cross from Scales, giving Westbrooke the corner but he couldn’t keep it in play so Singh was able to slow things down and restart with a goalkick.
The Lambs did their best to keep the ball and Scunthorpe pressed into their own half as the time counted down towards the break and Creaney was caught just offside from Maher’s intentional pass before the halftime whistle blew.

HT: 1-1

The home side restarted the game with both sides now attacking their own fanbase, and Tonks replaced Milnes before United kicked off.
But there was a stoppage within seconds of the ball heading downfield when Cockerill-Mollett went down and needed prolonged treatment on the field before he was able to leave it, and play could continue.
Belehouan whipped a cross into the box from the right on 50 but it went passt his teammate, Roberts, at the far post.
Rye screwed a low cross behind for a corner on 53 which allowed Cockerill-Mollett to be replaced by Curley and when the corner came in Singh missed his punch and Creaney cleared it off the line amid furious shouts for handball against the Lambs player from the pitch and terraces around him.
Tamworth didn’t pay it any mind though, and forced a corner on the left which fell invitingly for Curley at the back of the box but he struck his half volley up and over the target.
Singh got under a looping cross to deny Roberts a sight on goal at the near post on 59 and from the clearance Tonks was given an opportunity of a throw from the left but not before the stewards escorted a home fan away from the area of his launch and out of the ground.
Curley got in the way of a low strike from Starbuck on 62 which meant Singh could drop and smother it, but the home side continued their push and a foul by Bates on Westbrooke set up Roberts with the freekick which struck the wall and Westbrooke was way off target with the follow up.
The Lambs nearly struck shortly after when Roberts looked up and hit a right footed effort just wide of the left hand upright from 18 yards.
A strong run by sub Howe on 66 into the area brought a fine stop from Singh, and Scunthorpe maintained possession with Beestin hitting a low shot from distance which meant Singh had to protect is goal again.
Creaney nearly got the better of the United defence on 67 but the ball was nipped off his toes by Horton, and at the other end Sellars-Flemming tried an overhead kick, with one foot on the floor, which dropped onto the roof of the net.
Enoru replaced Roberts on 68 which Belehouan was off the field and so Singh’s goalkick went to The Lambs with a man advantage but the best they could muster was a throw for Tonks on the right which Mahady took above The Lambs in the area.
Singh plucked a goalbound curling shot from Roberts out of the air on 73, and it allowed Tamworth to push on with Maher taking a tumble under pressure and his freekick into the box was headed down for Bates but he blazed it into the away end.
However, The Iron struck and took the lead on 76 when Westbrooke’s ball into the near post was turned home from close range past Singh by Ubaezuonu (2-1, 76 mins)
This prompted a double change for Tamworth with Mols and Duku replacing Ponticelli and Creaney but Singh was called into action again on 80 when Roberts curled another shot from 18 yards on target and at the Lambs keeper.
And the lead was extended further on 82 when Roberts shot from the right of the box beat Singh and struck the post with Ubaezuonu following up to rifle it home, off the floored Singh (3-1, 83 mins)
Tonks sent a throw from the right into the area on 88 but Tamworth were forced to play it back to Singh before rebuilding.
Roberts was adjudged to have been tripped in the Lambs box on 90 giving the home side a penalty which Ubaezuonu stepped for his hattrick, which he was denied by a solid stop by Singh, diving to his right to push it away and seven additional minutes were shown.
There was opportunity for Tonks again on 94 but his throw was headed away and at the other end Roberts tried a similar strike to that which lead to the third goal, but he was off target this time.
Barrows cross came off Digie for a corner on 97, but neither Horton nor Howe could get to the low ball into the box and the final whistle blew on a victory for the home side.

The Lambs now take a break from league action with back to back home cup ties, entertaining Darlaston on Tuesday in the Birmingham Senior Cup, then Boston United on Saturday in the Isuzu FA Trophy quickly followed by Manchester United's return visit to The Lamb in the National League Cup.
