After Tuesday night’s defeat away at Forest Green, The Lambs travelled to 2nd placed Boreham Wood. Luke Garrard’s side sat one point behind leaders Carlisle United ahead of kick off which was delayed across all of the Enterprise National League games on the day to 3.03pm in support of the 3 up (promotion to the Football League) campaign.
It was Tamworth’s first ever visit to the Meadow Park stadium and Andy Peaks was looking for a response to the recent dip in form as the tough run of fixtures against sides in the top 5 continued unabated.
And although Storm Claudia had drenched the UK, the downpour had stopped in the hours prior to kick off and the home pitch looked in good shape ahead of the game.
Peaks made two changes to the side that kicked off at the New Lawn with Joe Rye and Ben Milnes, having finished the previous game, starting this one and Academy goalkeeper Daniel Rachel took a spot on the bench.
As the floodlights flicked into life Tamworth kicked off towards the home fans in the North Bank and a decent ball from Milnes saw Enoru chase it down into the box but Curd was able to gather it before he could get to it.
On 5, home captain Reynolds threaded it through to Brunt and he unleashed a shot from 18 yards at Singh which, due to the power, the keeper could only bat away from danger.
After Duku was been unable to get the ball away from a covering defender, Borehamwood attacked down the right through Sousa and his cross was cleared but fell to O’Connell who curled a low shot wide of the right hand post.
Another golden chance ca on 9 when a cross from the right of the box was headed down and inches wide by Rush at the far post.
From a left sided throw, and flick on by Rye on 10, Ponticelli rifled a strike from 18 yards just wide of the left hand post and after good play down the right and a final ball in from Enoru Duku was unable to keep his swept shot down and it ballooned high over the stand behind Curd’s goal.
The home side threatened again on 14 from a corner which came out to Sousa and he struck the crossbar with his right footed drive. Singh was the forced to make a low stop from a header from O’Connell after the ball had come out and was quickly chipped back into the danger area.
They got their rewards soon after though when Souse sent a corner from the right and after some neat passing on the edge of the box King sent a searching cross from the right into the far post for Rush to slide in a finish past Singh (1-0, 20 mins)
A deep cross from Enoru from the left looking for Maher at the far post was headed away for a Lambs corner on 37 and Cockerill-Mollett headed it back for Duku who headed it back into the box for Rye but he was bundled down in the six yard area. The referee made no hesitation in pointing to the spot and Milnes stepped up to plant it past Curd and level the tie (1-1, 29 mins)
Tamworth attacked again and with Curd off his line Cockerill-Mollett lobbed a shot into the area which Bush had to hear over his bar for a corner, which came to Enoru and then Milnes, but neither could find a clear line of sight through the home defence.
A foul on the home right wing set up King with the deadball on 34 and Maher was forced to concede a corner as Abdulmalik tried to get through, and it allowed The Wood to keep Tamworth pressed beck until Digie cleared his lines although when they regained possession Sousa drilled a low shot from 12 yards past the right hand upright.
Sousa was involved again on 44 chipping towards the far post for Rush to slide in again, but he missed his finish this time, and when Newton followed in, he blazed over the target from a tight angle.
2 minutes added time were shown and a deep cross from Enoru skipped away from him in space in the box as the half ended all square.
HT: 1-1
The wood restarted the game, with the Lambs attacking the uncovered away end immediately went of the attack as Tamworth put all eleven men behind the ball.
When the ball was not controlled effectively, Enoru made headway over the halfway line and threaded it through to Ponticelli but with Duku coming in his ball into the box was too strong and too far in front of him to cause a problem.
Milnes went down on 50 and was deemed unable to continue so Tonks replaced him alongside Bates in midfield.
The Lambs continued to work hard to disrupt the Wood’s attempts to play it around the park and made a quick break out of midfield on 56 through Bates and Enoru but the final ball was headed away.
When Borehamwood were able to get into the final third they found Tamworth a tough nut to crack with Donkor and his fellow teammates putting their bodies in the way to increase presence and when Souse did find a way through on the hour, his shot was turned goalward by Rush and cleared off the line by Rye.
At the other end, Maher forced a corner on 62, but play had to stop when Cockerill-Mollett went down and was replaced by Curley, and at the same time Mols replaced Maher.
Brunt curled a shot towards the far post which was easy for Singh to take at head height on 70 and when he played it through the Lambs defence for Sousa and Ilsenami to run onto on 72 the latter forced Singh to push it around the post. From the corner, which Singh took at height, Tamworth advanced and Enoru made his way down the centre, spotted Duku in a acre of space and he powered his shot home from the left of the area to the delight of the 100+ travelling faithful (1-2, 72 mins)
Digie blocked an on target shot from the left from Abdulmalik on 76 and a corner resulted which Singh punched away but took a shoulder in the process and both sides made two changes, as Creaney and Lynch replaced Duku and Enoru.
As expected the Wood pushed The Lambs back as the minutes ticked down forcing Tamworth to defend deeply, strongly and in numbers with any sort of clearance necessary be it a Digie header, a Tonks boot or a Creaney trap and turn.
Abdulmalik found Clayden in the area on 84 and Digie dealt with the threat, and Ponticelli made sure of the clearance after a good touch from Donkor.
A long clearance bounced up and over the lone Wood central defender Bush on 87 with Creaney on his back, and although it didn’t look like there was much contact when Creaney turned him to set up a one v one with Curd the referee spotted something and halted play.
Coxe was forced to make a snap decision on 89 and chose to elect a right footed shot from the right of the box and blazed it well wide of the mark as a staggering ten minutes added time was shown.
A Wood corner had to be dealt with on 92 which Ponticelli booted away and Rye headed the resulting cross away from the box.
Borehamwood made their final change on 94 and Singh needed treatment on 94 to further extend the game past the ten minutes.
Tonks sent a short through to Creaney in the corner on 98 rather than have to deal with a possible clearance, and Mols headed it out of play as The Lambs continue to work hard and frustrate their hosts attempts to get upfield.
A dangerous cross from Abdulmalik was dealt with but Singh picked up a booking and then collected the ball from another deep cross.
Inside the 101st minute Creaney smashed the all over the halfway line from inside Singhs area and the final whistle blew on an incredibly well deserved and hard fought three points.
