On the back of a ten game unbeaten run in all competitions, Andy Peaks’ Lambs welcomed The Pilgrims to the Altair Group Community Stadium with the DAZN cameras and ‘the world’ watching the 5.30pm kick off.
While Tamworth were beating Burnley U21 4-0 in the National League Cup, Graham Coughlan’s United side had lost 4-0 to Morecambe in the Enterprise National League and while home expectations and confidence were high coming into the fixture, everyone knew that nothing could be taken for granted, especially live on TV!
Peaks made a number of changes from the Tuesday night team, and included new loan signing Dillon De Silva who joined the club from Sutton United on a month's loan, after the midweek victory.
Boston got he game underway with The Lambs attacking the Meadow Street End in the first half, and Duku quickly forced a throw off a blocked cross which Tonks launched into the box but Duku was unable to get a touch as it went out of play past the far post.
Enoru made headway past his marker on the left on 6 and drove a cross at head height through the box but it was too fast for Duku to get to.
An audacious long range shot by Tonks on 12 meant that Lovett, retreating back onto his goalline had to watch the ball all the way back into his hands and Boston responded with a duo of corners which The Lambs defended.
Digie was forced to head Lavinier’s cross behind for another flagkick on 14 but not before Fogarty left the field to have a bleeding nose attended to, and he returned following a change of shirt too.
From the ensuing play Carson humped the ball forwards from what looked initially to be an attempted at a shot that simply didn’t come off as planned and there needed to be another stopped on 17 hen Carson went down under a hefty challenge and needed treatment.
However when Donnelly received the ball on the edge of the box on 19 he turned his man and lifted his shot past Singh into the roof of the net to the delight of the travelling fans. (0-1, 20 mins)
Donkor sent a teasing cross into the box on 26 but there was no one placed to connect with it in the box, so Tonks threw long from the clearance although it came to nothing.
There was a stoppage on 27 when Carson grounded himself to receive the attention of the physio on the field and when he left it, to return to the game after 30 seconds he got in the way of a Lambs throw and was duly booked before he rejoined the game.
Fairlamb was unable to prevent a right sided corner on 32 and Lankshear got his head to it a the near post but directed his effort just wide of the woodwork and Carson was unable to continue so the first change of the game was made before Hiwula looped a hopeful effort into the grasp of Singh on 34.
The Lambs mounted an attack on 40 and from Donkor’s deep cross from the right Mols got his head to the ball but it too looped high and Lovett was able to take control of it under the bar.
On 42, Tonks was booked for a push on Lavinier and the visitors went down field from the deadball and forced a corner which Lankshear connected to well but found the side netting via a deflection for another corner by the clubhouse which was cleared as five minutes added time was shown.
Mols was caught by Lavinier on the left of the box on 49 who was booked for his efforts and Milnes loaded the freekick but it was booted away by Donnelly.
HT: 0-1
As the temperature dropped, Tamworth restarted the game and immediately went on the attack with Tonks forcing a corner by the clubhouse with a back heel off a defender. Milnes took the kick and after an initial clearance Hollis hooked a low shot at Lovett from the edge of the area and when the Pilgrims advanced Hollis was then booked for a ‘preventative’ foul just over the halfway line.
However, when Singh and Digie miscommunicated on 50 Singh was booked for brining Hiwula down in the area and although Digie cleared the goalbound effort, the United player stepped up for the resulting penalty and slammed hit home in front of the travelling fans. (0-2, 51 mins)
After a good run by Enoru set the ball up for Mols to get a close range shot on target, United broke upfield and Donnelly doubled his tally with a finish past the advancing Singh, from the right channel, on the edge of the area (0-3, 56 mins)
Bates picked up a booking for a foul when some home fans were calling for a penalty an a minute or two later, Tim Dudding was sent from the home dugout by the referee after consultation with the fourth official.
The Lambs refused to lie down, and Tonks sent two long throws into the area but they were ineffective.
From his blocked cross, and resulting corner Tamworth pressed but Donkor’s shot was charged down.
Peaks made two changes before the next ball went into the Boston area, but it was long and Lovett restarted with a goalkick.
Hill drove a right footed shot low at the near post on 67 and Singh was happy to deal with it.
Connelly was then booked for a trip on Fairlamb, and The Lambs worked the ball into the final third again with Enoru forcing a corner off Waldock and it took a brave header from United captain Mills to get it away.
A strong run from Enoru again on 76 kept Boston back and defending in numbers, as Tamworth made two more changes with De Silva coming on for his debut.
A the minutes ticked down Lankshear had to go off after receiving treatment for a knock as Hiwula was replaced and made his away around the pitch at the Meadow Street end taking the plaudits from the United fans.
Cramp got the better of Lovett and Lavinier in the latter stages adding into the total of nine additional minutes.
De Silva capped his debut with a close range finish on 90+8 after his initial shot had been blocked, but despite a final push, it was nothing more than consolation for The Lambs.
