Lambs back in the play off places after comeback victory on the road

Lambs back in the play off places after comeback victory on the road

Tamworth FC1 Oct - 20:44

Late goals from Digie and Bates secure the win

After the long-haul point away to Hartlepool United at the weekend, Andy Peaks’ Lambs took another trip, albeit somewhat shorter, to Moss Lane to face Phil Parkinson’s Robins.
Tamworth started the Wednesday night fixture, due to the coverage of the game on DAZN, in 11th place on 18 points, with Altrincham in 19th on 12, and a victory for The Lambs could see them jump back up into the play off places at full time and Peaks made two changes to the eleven that started at Victoria Park with Tom Tonks watching from the sidelines due an accumulation of 5 yellow cards, while Tyler Roberts had picked up a knock which brought Stefan Mols and Harvey Sayer into the line-up.

The home side, in red and black, got the game underway, attacking the away end, with the Lambs in their sky blue away kit and Singh in fluorescent yellow kicking away from the travelling faithful.
Singh was tested early when Kirk hit a low shot from the left channel which forced the Lambs keeper to drop and smother the effort.
Sayer received the ball from Mols out of midfield on 3 and fired from distance but failed to get his strike on target, and then Lynch made headway down the left and got into the box before trying to play his shot under the keeper from 8 yards but Hutchinson was well protected by his defence and the home side survived.
An Alty attack saw a cross from the left by Kirk and it was just inches away from Crawford before falling to Banks who sent his right footed effort high and wide of the mark.
Another Robins move, this time down the right on 14, saw Crawford cross into the box and Gales got a touch but not enough to trouble Singh too much, and then Donkor made headway towards the home box and hit a low right footed effort on target forcing Hutchinson to parry his effort away.
From a Fairlamb throw on the right on 16 Milnes found the ball at his feet and swivelled and shot but his effort was blocked.
The first corner came on 19 via a deflected home cross, which Osborne took, and Singh eventually gathered.
Enoru picked up a stray pass by Knowles on 23 and darted towards the box, forcing a first Lambs corner from his boxed out cross which, after a game of head tennis, was cleared.
Crawford drove right footed on 27 but only made the Lambs fans hold onto their hats as it cannoned back off the hoardings behind them and there was a similar end result when Gale threaded it through to Kirk on the Alty left on 29.
Bates was booked for a pull on Gale in the centre circle on 31 and the home crowd appealed for a penalty on 32 when Crawford went down under a challenge but the referee was having none of it and there were no complaints from the Altrincham players.
The Lambs has to be on their mettle when Donkor lost possession and a corner resulted from Banks’ blocked shot which came to nothing when Hollis was pushed to ground by Gale.
The home side maintained their share of the game forcing another corner on 42 and once again a Lambs boot disposed of the danger and the first half ended goalless with not one second of added time played.

HT: 0-0

The Lambs restarted proceedings but it didn’t take long for Alty to force a corner on the left and Digie was booked before the ball came in and Bates cleared.
The home fans expected the net to ripple on 49 when Banks found Gale in the box unmarked 12 yards out but he scuffed his shot up and over the crossbar.
Gale ended another attacking move on 53 with a sliding touch in the box from Crawford’s left sided centre by putting the ball wide of the near post and Sayer countered with a deep cross which was put behind by Banks for a Lambs corner. Milnes’ deadball was well taken in the crowded area by Hutchinson.
Crawford thought he had broken the deadlock on 55 with a powerful header from a cross into the area but it was ruled out for a foul, and The Lambs worked the ball to the other end with Enoru forcing a corner which was cleared by Hutchinson and allowed a quick break by the home side.
Handball by Sayer halted progress so Osborne sent the freekick in and a corner resulted which he also took and this time Banks’ cushioned his header into the top right corner and this time it did count (1-0, 59 mins)
Milnes took a blow to the head on 63 bringing play to a halt while he received treatment and goalscorer Banks was booked when he tripped Enoru on the wing on 67.
Milnes and Sayer stood for the freekick and the former whipped it in but Digie was unable to get control of it at the back of the box.
Crawford took a knock on 67 and had to leave the field to recover as Tamworth put pressure on the home defence, and when it came out to Sayer who rifled a left footed half volley from 20 yards just off target.
Sayer then curled a teasing cross into the box which Hutchinson got to before Mols could nip in front of the keeper and when the ball went out of play Peaks made three changes with just under 20 remaining.
Ponticelli worked the ball down the right for a corner which Milnes took on 80, and it was headed away from Digie by Osborne but Milnes cross was put behind for another flagkick and this time Digie connected at the far post to head home the equaliser. (1-1, 81 mins)
Knowles dragged his left footed shot wide of the near post from Reed’s pull back on 82 and Milnes gave the captain’s armband to Singh as he left the field to be replaced by Riley.
Great work from Lynch set up Duku with a right footed strike from 12 yards on 85 but he saw it blocked by Sassi to send it up and over the bar for a corner.
From the corner the ball came out to Bates and he drilled it low and into the area and it took a deflection to put it into the bottom left corner and the back of the net to spark the travelling faithful into celebratory song (1-2, 86 mins)
Seven minutes added time were shown at the end of the second half and Duku had a good chance to increase the lead with a low strike from 18 yards on 96 which Hutchinson pushed behind for a corner, and another corner came from Riley’s run and cross.
The Lambs kept the ball in the corner and the final whistle blew on a successful midweek road trip.
