Minstermen too strong for hardworking Lambs

Minstermen too strong for hardworking Lambs

Tamworth FC9 Sep - 20:48

City take their time but make the pressure tell

On the back of two victories, both 2-1, Andy Peaks’ Lambs travelled to the LNER Community Stadium to be welcomed by the Minstermen. The game had originally been scheduled for a Saturday 10 days previously, but due to the stadium hosting games in the Women’s Rugby World Cup the fixture had been moved to the Tuesday night and was the only midweek Enterprise National League fixture.
Tamworth sat ahead of City in the table, by one point, although the home side had played two games less with 9 from 5 ahead of kick off and it was the second game in charge for the new home boss, Stuart Maynard having taken over from Adam Hinslewood less than a fortnight before kick off.
Following Kwaku Donkor’s sending off at the weekend, Andy Peaks made just one change to the side that defeated Eastleigh with Matt Curley coming in at right back.

A minute’s applause was observed before Tamworth kicked off the game, in memory of City player David Longhurst who passed away while playing at the old Bootham Cresent ground some 35 years ago, at the age of just 25.
Tamworth went on the attack down the left and the ball rebounded back to Male in the home goal from an Enoru shot inside the first minute, before Sinclair glanced a cross from the left over the target, at the near post.
Tonks went down with a bump to the head on 7 and had to leave the field for treatment an before he could return Felix crossed from the right into the box and Singh took it easily.
A flashed freekick by the homeside just cleared Singh’s crossbar on 10, and then Newby unleashed a right footed drive from 18 yards a minute later which forced the Lambs keeper to push it away for a corner. The flagkick from Hunt found Sinclair at the near post, and his header skimmed past the target and out for a goalkick.
Pearce found himself in a acre of space in the box on 13 but conspired to send his free header up and wide of the mark.
The home side continued to press and struck the crossbar on 15 when Kitching fired a powerful volley at goal, and Hollis got his boot in the way to deflect it up and onto the woodwork and out.
Banks ended a retained period of home possession with a low strike on the outside of his right boot on 17, which Singh took without too much trouble.
At the other end Enoru made a foray into the box and beat his man, but Howe was on hand to block his low drive for a Tonks corner on the right on 19 which was cleared.
City forced a corner off Bates on 23, with Hunt sending it straight into Singh and Tamworth broke with Sayer finding Duku on the left of the box who had to take a step and try first time, and with a defender in front of him, his curling shot was high and wide of the far post.
Felix then found Pearce for another header, which rose off target again but Singh jumped to watch it over, and when he landed he needed treatment, giving both teams a drinks break.
Pearce struck a few yards over bar the into the away seating (North) stand from 25 yards on 31 and Singh took a Banks cross from the right at height on 32 as the home side continued to look to open their account.
On 38, City pressed from a corner and Fagan-Wallcot missed his touch, under pressure from The Lambs defence, but York retained the ball and when Pearce ran onto a through ball on 39 he turned and shot towards the near post, forcing Singh to push it away and Tamworth to defend the flagkick.
Despite all the possession, City were unable to create clear chance, and this was the case again on 43 hen Felix got into a good position on the right only to send his cross far too long into the box, allowing The Lambs to take a considered approach to getting the game going again, and when Sinclair looked up but hit his shot yards high and wide the travelling Lambs faithful spared no time in reminding him his aim was off.
Three minutes added time was shown at the end of the first half and Fairlamb continued to frustrate Felix, but he did find Pearce on 47 only for the number 10 to blast his first time strike high over the crossbar from 8 yards in the final action of the half.

HT: 0-0

The Minstermen restarted the game and went on the attack straight away, but The Lambs defened strongly and broke through Enoru who found Duku in the area but his first touch was too strong and Male smothered it before he could get a second touch.
At the other end Singh pushed Sinclair’s right footed drive over the bar however there was no stopping a right footed curling strike from the left channel which landed plumb in the top right corner (1-0, 48 mins)
IN the move after the restart Enoru clattered ankles and needed the attention of the physio.
Another move involving Sinclair and Pearce looked to have found a way through the Tamworth back line on 57 and it turned out to be the wrong side of the latter to cause a problem, however when Singh spilled a Felix cross on 59 it was turned out to be a simple finish for Newby from 8 yards (2-0, 59 mins)
Digie cut the ball out from Sinclair’s path for a corner on the right on 62, which came to nothing, before one-time City player Duku (wo received a generous round of applause from the home crowd) and Sayer were substituted for Lynch and Roberts respectively shortly after.
The Lambs made two further changes on 79 as the home side continued to hold most of the cards and when Roberts was booked Hunt nearly doubled his tally off the freekick with a return pass angled shot from the left on 85 which Hollis headed away off the line for a corner.
Hunt did net in the next move though, lifting a shot from the left channel up and over and into the same corner that he scored his first, but with a much more audacious effort. (3-0, 87 mins)
York rounded things off as the clock ticked onto 90 with Fagan-Walcutt stopping low to head home near the far post, a corner from the left which was not dealt with as it skipped through the box, from a couple of feet out (4-0, 90 mins) and 6 minutes added time was shown.
Singh and Digie clattered in the area when a cross from the right came in and Singh needed a moment to recover and Tamworth’s first shot on target came from a Roberts effort from the edge of the box which Male took at chest height in the final action of the game.
