Lambs victorious over Tinners

Lambs victorious over Tinners

Tamworth FC19 Aug 2025 - 20:43

Two quick strikes set up first win of the season

The Lambs returned home after the 2-0 reversal away at Roots Hall at the weekend, and welcomed the 2024-25 National League South winners, and fulltime, Truro City to the Altair Group Community Stadium for the first ever meeting between the two clubs. Both sides came into the game with no points on the board after two defeats from two and there was no doubt that both sets of fans were keen for a quick turnaround in fortunes to get some points on the Enterprise National League table.
Andy Peaks made one change to the side that faced Southend United with Oliver Lynch making way for Manny Duku, as The Lambs went in search of a positive outcome against John Askey’s Tinner’s.

On a mild summer evening Tamworth kicked off the game towards the Meadows Street end and an early Tonks throw forced the visitors to defend their lines.
Roberts released Enoru with a measured ball through the middle down the left channel on 5 but his cross was too long for Duku at the back of the box.
The Lambs went very close to opening the scoring on 11 when a chip over for Enoru saw his flash the ball into the box and although Ponticelli couldn’t get to it, Tonks followed up and beat Lavercombe but a covering Truro defender was well position to block his effort and the ball popped up for Tonks again but his reactionary touch sent it looping up and just over the bar.
Ponticelli then saw a goal bound shot from the right of the box hooked away off the line and despite claims that it crossed the line, none of the officials indicated as such.
Enoru robbed the ball off Oxlade-Chamberlain on 15 and found Ponticelli who in turn found Duku who turned his covering defender and struck low from 18 yards forcing Lavercombe to drop and smother the ball at his right hand post.
Enoru was upended trying to advance from the left wing on 19 but captain Singh was booked for advancing to the halfway line to speak to the referee about an earlier challenge, and when the ball went in Lavercombe punched it away.
The Lambs took the lead in fine fashion on 23, after great work from Enoru to keep the ball and advance towards the box he found Curley on the right and he passed to Roberts who sent an inch perfect cross to the far post for Duku to power home with a strong header (1-0, 23 mins)
And the lead was doubled on 25 when Enoru made another darting run down the left channel, beat two players and touched it past the advancing keeper and it looked to be going in, but Rooney had the last touch to put the ball over his own line (2-0, 25 mins)
Truro made an early change just before the half hour and enjoyed some possession, forcing a corner on 33 but The Lambs defended the danger and forced the visitors back with a Roberts ball into the box which had to be dealt with.
Tonks loaded a throw from the right on 42 which was cleared, so jogged over to the main stand side and repeated the action resulting in both Duku and Ponticelli getting headers on target, amid a shout for handball against the visiting defence but the calls from the terracing were waved away and one minute added time was shown at the end of the half.

HT: 2-0

After a second change for the Tinners the visitors restarted proceedings and Johnson-Fisher made space in the right of the box to turn and get a right footed shot away which took a touch to take it over the crossbar for a corner which Singh took at height.
Duku headed a Tonks throw from the right up and onto the roof of the Truro net on 49 and at the other end Starkie tried a shot from 30 yards, blazing it high and wide of the mark.
A Curley freekick was touched away from Duku as he watched it drop into the back of the box, and Tonks’ throw from the left on 57 did similarly, evading the reach of Lavercombe as it nestled on top of the goal.
Ponticelli got his header from Enoru’s curling cross on target on 63 and Rooney was booked for tripping Enoru as he raced out of midfield.
The hardworking Enoru and Tonks made way for fresh legs on 66 and from the restart the ball found Duku but he had to take a step to his right and narrow the angle before he could shoot, and it went high over the target from the right of the box.
The Lambs defended strongly to deny a double smash on target on 68 and Duku headed it away but needed treatment after he landed and Truro took the opportunity to exert some pressure without testing Singh, until the Lambs defender returned to the field.
Peaks made another two changes on 78 and both Mols and Lynch were involved in a half chance for the Lambs on 79 but neither could get the ball out from under their feet in the right of the box and Lavrecombe was able to smother it.
Roberts did all the hard work to turn his marker on 80 and break into the right of the area before whipping the ball to the far post but Lynch was unable to turn it home at the far post.
After good work by Fairlamb down the left, McGlinchey slapped a shot from a tight angle towards goal on 85 and forced Lavercombe into a parry at his post.
Another strong run from Roberts was halted by a sliding challenge on the right of the D, and Riley drilled it on target through the wall forcing the keeper to push it away to safety.
Man of the match Digie glanced his header from Roberts right sided cross just past the far post on 88 and when the ball dropped to the latter on 89 he struck a right footed half volley which rose over the bar by just an inch or two.
Lynch did well to forced the keeper into a low save with a low shot from the right in the next move and four minutes added time were shown.
Tonks, off the field, was booked for retaining the ball from the opposition on 94, before the final whistle blew on the first three points of the season.
