With three games remaining Andy Peaks’ Lambs made the journey to Gloucestershire to face Steve Cotterill’s 3rd placed Rovers who were sat seven points ahead of Oldham, who they face in their next game, and with York City 13 points ahead of them in second.
Had Tamworth been able to get a win over Solihull Moors on Good Friday they would have been in with a shout of a top seven finish, and even with a club record 60 points under their belt Peaks was not complacent and was looking for a response to the local derby defeat.
The journey down had been covered with Bank Holiday rain, but Tamworth got the game underway in glorious sunshine, and pressed the home side back in the opening exchanges with a freekick from Tonks on the left causing problems before Long cleared his lines.
Hollis fed Fairlamb and his cross from the left was deflected behind for a Tonks corner on 7 which Cann punched away and it was defended for a throw for Tonks to send into the box from the right. It went back to Singh and he launched it upfield for Ponticelli who hit a first time shot from the edge of the box and narrowly missed opening the scoring as it whistled past the left hand post.
At the other end, Robon beat the Lambs offside trap to go through one on one with Singh and found his route to goal blocked although the ball ballooned up and required Fairlamb to head it away from the target.
And then Hollis prevented McAlister from making a smart finish from 12 yards with a clearance off the line as the home side continued to press. Sercombe’s shot was then charged down and Long had penalty claims waved away by the referee when he and Hollis went shoulder to shoulder.
Ponticelli received the ball from Fairlamb from the left on 13 and went for the top right corner but his shot curled over the target before Quigley, on 15, sent a shot from the left into the hands of Singh.
From an Enoru clearance on 18 Creaney went up to head the ball down on the halfway line but there was a clash of heads with Harries which the referee deemed dangerous and showed a yellow card to the Rovers player.
Cotterill was then sent from the dugout for clashing with the Lambs bench, and after a chat with the referee Peaks was booked, although he had stayed out of the mellee on the touchline, before play restarted.
Finn and Curley combined on the right on 23 with the ball looping to Creaney in the box and he managed to get a shot away on the volley, but under pressure from two defender, it was off target.
Enoru unleashed a low right footed effort from the left od the D on 28 which skipped a yard past the right hand post but the home side took the lead in the next move following a high ball which Curley was unable to get his head to ahead of Quigley and it fell to Garrick in the box and with the referee playing advantage he fired home past the dive of Singh (1-0, 28 mins)
And it was two within two minutes when McCann skipped through the Lambs defence and chipped low over Singh from 8 yards to double the advantage (2-0, 31 mins)
Tamworth responded with a Curley cross which eventually fell to Enoru however his angled finish rose over the target, a neat chip towards far post was pushed away by Cann and then Ponticelli his a long range effort just over the target.
Singh made a telling stop on 39 from McCann as the ball squirmed under his body and came back to his grateful grasp off the post, and he batted away a goalbound strike from Quigley as Rovers pushed on for a third. The ball came back out to Harries, and his shot deflected off Sundire for a corner which came out to Sercombe and took a massive deflection for another which Ponticelli cleared.
However, a third strike came on 42 when Garrick threaded the ball through to Robson in the area and he diverted it past Singh, who could do nothing about it (3-0, 42 mins)
In the first of 5 minutes added time Creaney was booked following a jump with Cann which left the keeper on the ground and needing the ‘magic sponge’.
There were then two chances for Enoru who made headway down the centre holding off his marker, but rifled his strike from 18 yards over the bar and from a Tonks throw came out to Enoru on 49 but his shot was charged down.
HT: 3-0
Rovers got the second half away at The New Lawn, and both sides went in search on an early strike but both keeper we able to gather the ball from punts forwards without too much trouble.
Tonks sent a right sided throw into the area for Cann to catch on 50 and then Garrick skimmed the top of the bar with a smart shot on the turn from 18 yards.
The Lambs forced a corner on the right on 54 but Hollis’ far post heard back into the mix was pulled back for a foul by the defender and when Fairlamb and Sundire were both fouled on the touchline in quick succession on 57 Curley sent the freekick into the box and it came to Finn on the right but Enoru was unable to get his head to his inswinging cross.
Enoru took the ball past his marker on the hour but found Cann in front of him, and a couple of Tonks throws allowed The Lambs to maintain the pressure with a corner resulting for Finn to take and Cann to punch away.
Tamworth made two changes just past the hour and it gave Tamworth some different options, and from a Tonks throw on 65 Creaney nearly stabbed home from close range, but Robson was perfectly positioned to boot his low goalbound attempt from crossing the line at the left hand post.
Digi was unable to prevent a corner which Rovers kept possession of without forcing an attack until Knowles launched a long throw which it turn earned a corner on the right for McCann to direct towards the centre spot, however the training ground move was halted by the offside flag.
Enoru’s ball from the left looking for the head of Creaney on 81 was taken smartly by Cann, and the keeper had to be quick to clear a backpass from the Lambs striker’s incoming presence on 82.
When Singh fumbled a high ball into the box and it dropped behind him, there were calls for a penalty when Cardwell went down but the referee was not swayed by the shouts from the pitch and terraces.
Lambs sub Williams made a mazy run down the left on 87 and forced a corner which Fletcher sent into the danger area, but the home defence dealt with it, twice.
The fourth official indicated a minimum of four minutes added time, and Edge came on for his Lambs debut, replacing Digie, and immediately went up for a corner which Hollis got his head to and Cann smothered and the final whistle blew.
