On the back of the 4-2 win over Braintree Town, The Lambs hoped it would be a Good Friday in terms of football as they welcomed local rivals Solihull Moors who had defeated Southend at Roots Hall in their last game to record just their second win in 16 league games, and found themselves in a near identical position to The Iron, 7 points ahead of the drop zone with four to play.
Andy Peaks’ Lambs, still awaiting confirmation of the date for the Birmingham Senior Cup Final against Burton Albion had four to play too, and with 60 points could close the four point gap between themselves and the final play off place should they record a win, and results elsewhere went their way.
The Moors kicked off the game with The Labs attacking the Meadow Street End in the first half and the home defence had to deal with some early forays forwards.
A very strong run from Tonks down the left channel on 5 earned a corner and his inswinging flagkick was nearly forced home off the head of Ponticelli but the visiting defence cleared their lines.
From a Ponticelli knock through, Enoru forced a second corner on the left on 7 which Walker plucked off the head of Hollis in the centre of the six yard box.
Despite Enoru continuing his run on 12 after a trip by Bostock play was called back by the referee and Tonks lined up the deadball from 20 yards in the left channel, curling his effort just over the bar with Walker at full stretch.
Enrou went down off the ball on 17 although nothing was seen by the officials, and he needed treatment on the field before play could continue.
Another left sided flagkick was awarded off Enoru’s deflected cross on 20 and Tonks found Digie past the far post and his header was put behind for another corner, this time on the right which Wilkinson headed away for a throw on the left. Tonks launched it into the area and Solihull booted it away but it was soon back in The Lambs possession.
Ponticelli dinked the ball over the top in a clever one-two with Enoru but it was just too long for the latter to get to, to touch past Walker from 12 yards.
On 24 Solihull broke forwards down the left with Thorpe making headway past Curley into the area and it took a brave block from Singh to deny him finishing on the angle and both players took a moment to recover before play restarted with a drop ball.
And from the restart The Lambs took the lead when Fairlamb played an incisive pass to Enoru who cut past his marker into the left of the area and drilled it low across the six yard box for McGlinchey to drive home from the right into the top left corner (1-0, 26 mins).
A freekick into the box was met by the head of Creaney on 29 but his cushioned header dropped over the target and Enoru then took the ball past his man on the touchline and pulled it back to Tonks but his shot from 8 yards was blocked.
Another Tonks throw from the left was taken at height by Walker on 32 and the keeper had to be quick to get to a downward Hollis header on 34, before Enoru could get to it.
Osborne was bundled down on the edge of the area on 36 setting up Bostock with the freekick and he curled his strike over the bar.
Singh was called upon to deny Wilkinson’s close range finish in the next move, when Osbourne crossed low from the right to his feet, on the edge of the six yard area.
Play switched back in The Lambs favour as Digie’s header from a Tonks throw on 41 was booted away off the Moors goal line, and another throw was cleared as four minutes added time was shown.
Tonks sent a left sided corner into the area but a foul prevented any second ball play from Hollis’ header and Enoru nearly got the better of Tunicliffe from a ball over the top of the Solihull back line before McGlinchey forced the keeper into a low stop at the far post with a rifled half volley in the final action of the half.
HT: 1-0
The Lambs restarted the match but a foul on Creaney by Dodoo halted play as quickly as it started and Singh went the freekick into the box for Whitmore to deal with via a scuffed but effective boot away.
At the other end Thorpe was felled by Curley and from the freekick Singh’s punch span to the right of the area for Wilkinson to rifle home (1-1, 50 mins).
Walker clawed the ball away when Hollis’ attempt while on the floor from close range on 52 nearly provided the perfect response as shouts for a penalty against the Moors defence were waved away.
Fairlamb and Dodoo earned themselves a booking each when they tangled in the corner of the ground on the hour, and from a Tonks throw on the right on 62, a corner resulted which the midfielder dropped onto the head of Creaney and it came back to McGlinchey but his stab at goal from 12 yards drifted just wide of the left hand upright.
Wilkinson chipped goalward on the angle on 64 and Singh took it at full stretch without being too tested and on 69 the same player had to leave the field to change his shirt causing a short delay as the fourth official looked over proceedings on the touch line.
A link up between Enoru, McGlinchey and Creaney nearly forged a goal for McGlinchey on 74 but his close range snatched shot was taken by Walker and when Tonks sent a teasing cross over on 75 it fell to Enoru but he blazed over the target.
The Lambs continued to press and Enoru saw his shot charged down and Peaks brought on fresh legs with 10 to go as Waldron replaced Creaney.
Enoru forced another corner to Tonks to take on 84 and Clarke headed it away from the near post and when the ball was cleared Curley couldn’t prevent it going behind for a first Moors corner, but needed treatment to a cut and was replaced by Crompton before continued.
From the corner, Solihull captain Whitmore headed down and past Singh through a crowded box at the far post to give the travelling fans cause to celebrate (1-2, 87 mins).
Eight minutes added time were shown as both sides more changes and when the ball ballooned inviting up for substitute Finn his header was cleared off the line.
Tamworth packed the Moors box out for a couple of late late Tonks throws, and a Fairlamb forced corner which drew Singh in the box for the flagkick but there was no late late equaliser as the visitors took the points home down the M42.
