All square at Farley Way as the woodwork denies The Lambs four times

Tamworth FC8 Jul - 20:36

Ponticelli nets his second in two in a tale of two halves

The Lambs second pre-season run out saw Andy Peaks squad make the short journey into Leicestershire to face former Tamworth midfield maestro Ryan Beswick’s promoted (to the Southern League Premier Central for 2025-26) side on their 3G surface.
After the 1-0 away win over Lichfield, Peaks switched the lineup around for the first half and welcomed Jas Singh back into the goalkeeper shirt.

Tamworth started the game in glorious sunshine and Tonks had an early throw from the left which keeper Allsopp punched away and it fell to McGlinchey to the right of the D but his low shot cannoned back off the near post.
Milnes popped a dropping half volley on target on 6 and Roberts made a strong run into the box from the left, finding the Lambs trialist striker who was unable to get his shot past the covering defender at the near post.
On 14 a Tonks throw from the right forced the keeper, under pressure, to push it off the goalline, but a foul halted play and in the next play Fairlamb forced a corner off his left sided cross.
Milnes took the flagkick which was headed behind for another on the opposite side so he took that one too and it went long to Roberts who tried a directed cushioned header but it rose over the target.
At the other end, a foul outside the Lambs D gave Master a sight on goal from the freekick but it was wasted and failed to trouble Singh.
Hollis picked up a rare pre-season booking on 23 after going down under a challenge by the corner flag, and then kicking the ball away. From the freekick Lyne finished from close range after The Lambs defence failed to clear the ball out of the penalty area and Tetlow’s over shoulder kick fell invitingly for his teammate (1-0, 24 mins)
Two more Milnes corners came on 33 which the Quorn defenders dealt with, and then a Fairlamb cross forced Allsopp to punch the ball away from dropping on target.
Cobourne made headway into the Lambs box on 36, rifling his low shot on the angle into the side netting, and Hollis was replaced by Digie shortly afterwards and the defender forced a corner with a header from a Milnes ball into the area on 39. Milnes’ flagkick found Cullinane-Liburd at the far post, but under pressure he flashed his header a few yards wide of the mark.
Roberts was clattered to the ground on the left corner of the box on 41 but Milnes overhit his freekick, with McGlinchey unable to get anywhere near it as it zipped high and wide and out past the far post.
From a deep Singh deadball on 44 the Lambs trialist striker headed against the woodwork with Allsopp covering and play switched quickly to the other end resulting in a corner which Tetlow headed on target, but Singh was able to bat it away with a reactionary stop.
And when Cullinane-Liburd headed over the crossbar from McGlinchey’s lifted dink into the box the half time whistle blew.

HT: 1-0

Peaks made expected changes at the break to give the other half of his squad some pre-season minutes, with only Singh and Digie remaining from the first 45 minutes.
Wyatt rifled low and wide of the left hand post in the first few minutes of the half and Bates sent a deadball over the target from 30 yards on 52.
A corner was played short on 53 and aimed for Ponticelli, but put behind for another corner, and from Sayer’s flagkick Cockerill-Mollett’s header came back off the crossbar, the third time The Lambs had struck the frame of the goal in the game.
A Quorn trialist was booked for a foul on Sayer on the hour and Beswick made a half dozen changes for the final 30 minutes of the game.
And it wasn’t long before Ponticelli slotted home past Allsopp with a low strike after a great through ball from Wyatt into the area. (1-1, 62 mins)
The Lambs continued to press and Ponticelli and Wyatt both saw powerful strikes blocked and Sayer saw his cross diverted off for a corner on 67. The same player took the flagkick and when it came out to Wyatt his strike was pushed away by the keeper and Riley’s ball back in came back off the cross bar.
Quorn made three more changes on 69 and a short backpass to the home keeper which Ponticelli chased down, and when it went out to Wyatt he tried a long range ‘pass’ into the empty net but got his aim off target.
Ponticelli got his head onto a left sided cross and it was blocked for a corner, which Riley saw punched away and it took a timely challenge from Curley to prevent a quick break of 3 versus 2 by the home side.
Cockerill-Mollett was booked on 82 for pulling the shirt of a Quorn substitute as he tried to advance over the halfway line but nothing came of the freekick and The Lambs kept the pressure up as the minutes ticked down to the final whistle.
