Birmingham Senior Cup Semi-Finals beckon

Lambs leave it late to progress

Andy Peaks’ Lambs took a break from league action to welcome fellow Vanarama National League side Solihull Moors to the Compare The Build Community Stadium for their Quarter Final tie in the Birmingham Senior Cup.
With Racing Club Warwick and Coventry City already through to the Semi Final draw, and Aston Villa due to take on Burton Albion in a couple of weeks, The Lambs fielded a strong side in a bid to continue their bid to reach the final for the first time since the trip to WBA a few years ago.
Peaks made ten changes to the side that had defeated Dagenham and Redbridge at the weekend including Jamie Willets and Luke Fairlamb returning to the starting eleven alongside Ben Milnes, after his enforced rest following concussion protocols.
Meanwhile, Moors boss Richard Steadman made eleven changes to the side that came back from Hartlepool United with a point at the weekend.
The Moors kicked off the game with Tamworth attacking the Meadow Street end in the first half and a couple of long throws from Curley caused early problems.
On 5 Holman drove low on target from 18 yards forcing Singh to drop and smother his effort and in response Ponticelli rifled a right footed half volley from a similar distance wide of the right hand post and on 12 The Lambs took the lead with a fine header from Waldron who met a cross from the right with perfection to direct it back past Flahavan from 8 yards out. (1-0, 12 mins)
Brick found space at the edge of the Lambs area on 20 to try a lob of Singh as he came out to meet the ball, but the Moors man was unable to get a decent touch on the ball and sent it spinning into the hoardings.
Watts was booked for a late challenge on Finn on the Lambs right wing on 25 and although nothing came of it immediately, Tamworth kept the ball and momentum and Enoru forced a left sided corner off Owen on 29 and Milnes struck the outside of the left half post with his deadball.
An incisive through ball from Ponticelli out of midfield found Finn a minute later, and his low ball into the box was turned behind by Smith but nothing came of the corner.
Fairlamb was upended by Holman on the halfway line on 35, earning him a booking, and a similar reckless sliding challenge from Stevenson on the same Lambs defender in a similar position on the left of midfield saw him go into the referee’s notebook too, on 36.
Holman missed a golden chance to equalise on 43, getting past The Lambs defence down the Moors left wing and with Singh coming out to meet him he pushed a shot on the angle towards the target but it bounced wide of the far post to the relief of the home faithful.
Either 1 and / or 3 minutes added time were shown on the fourth officials board at the end of the half (!) which ended with The Lambs taking the lead into the dressing room.

HT: 1-0

Tamworth restarted the game but it stopped a few minutes in when Curley and Brick needed treatment on the field after the number 9 had ridden two challenges in midfield but took the brunt of a fair challenge to deny a 1-2 into the box.
Both players were OK to continue and The Lambs pushed up field with Raikhy finding Enoru on the left and is ball came back out to Finn who forced Flahavan to pluck the ball out of the air with a head high half volley.
Ponticelli tried a strike from distance on 55 which the keeper dropped to deny although he was beaten by Ponticelli on 57 after a flowing move out of the right wing, but the low strike curled around the left hand post too.
Both sides made a change on the hour, as Sundire replaced Fairlamb at left back and on 64 Stevenson forced a corner off Cullinane-Liburd with Well-Morrison planting his flagkick onto the head of Smith at the back of the box but he was unable to direct it on target.
Despite Curley’s timely challenge to halt the run of Moors sub Holmes in midfield on 65, the visitors were gifted possession back and made their way through to give Brick the ball unmarked in the box and he fired past Singh for the equaliser (1-1, 65 mins)
Shouts of handball against Sundire in the box on 67 were waved away by referee Smith and Stevenson saw his low shot blocked well by Willetts on 70 but the ball rebounded to Brick who forced Singh into a telling stop with his right footed effort.
As minutes ticked away towards a possible penalty shootout, Ponticelli was beaten to a lofted pass into the area, by Flahavan and The Lambs made two more changes with 10 to go as Tonks and Creaney came into the game.
Milnes went down under a challenge needing treatment on 81 and came back on, on 83 as Stevenson hit a low shot through the crowded area at Singh.
Milnes was unable to continue though so was replaced by McGlinchey and Finn took the captains armband.
Tonks sent a long throw into the area and a flick on allowed Creaney to slam home his 101st goal for The Lambs (2-1, 86 mins)
Solihull mounted a strong move into the box on 88 and forced Singh to block a low strike with his feet before Tonks could clear his lines, as six minutes added time was shown.
Cullinane-Liburd then went down in the Lambs area and needed treatment for cramp but could not continue so Hollis replaced him.
Enoru nearly made it three on 94, but when the ball ran free off his push around the keeper Creaney knocked it through to Tonks to drive home low under the keeper from 6 yards out (3-1, 90+4 mins)
And it was 4 on 90+8 when Creaney finished a Lambs move down the right which saw Enoru pull the ball back for Creaney to finish at the far post with relative ease. (4-1, 90+8 mins)
The final whistle blew shortly after to put The Lambs through into the Semi Finals of the cup.
