Goalscorer Tom McGlinchey discussed his perspective on the 3-1 victory against AFC Telford United on Saturday afternoon as Tamworth rounded off their pre-season campaign at the SEAH stadium.

He was the third man on the scoresheet for the Lambs as he fired an effort into the bottom-left corner in the second half, following the previous goals scored by Jake Hutchinson and Teo Kurtaran.

He said: “I thought it was a good performance.

“First half, it took us a while to get to grips with what they were doing. There were some good rotations in midfield. Fletch [Alex Fletcher] used to play for us, good player in there.

“It was a little bit tough to get hold of, but I thought after we scored, a nice finish from Jake, I thought we got back into it. Second half was a little bit different, we were a bit more dominant, played some decent stuff, and a good test going into next week.

“It’s nice to be back on the scoresheet. Getting a couple of goals after being injured for the majority of last season, is nice. Good to get back on the sheet, and a decent finish with my left foot, so I’ll take that.”

McGlinchey, being one of the longer-serving players, has had to adapt to multiple departures and arrivals this summer in both players, and staff, but has maintained that the team spirit has remained the same.

He said: “We’ve always had a great team spirit. We’ve gone a bit younger, and some of the more experienced lads may be moving on. Still a good core group. Jas [Singh], Jordan [Cullinane-Liburd], who’ve obviously been here for a while. We’ve got some good young lads, some lads stepping up who’ve got some good energy, so feels like a nice group.”

Tamworth begin their National League campaign next weekend with a trip to Boreham Wood on Saturday 8th August.

The Wood came close to promotion last season, but narrowly missed out. McGlinchey is looking forward to getting stuck into the week’s training and is ready for the challenge.

“Yeah. Last couple of games, Macclesfield on Tuesday and Telford have been a good warm-up for that. We know they’re probably gonna have quite a lot of the ball, which has been the case the last couple of games as well, so, good to practice the kind of shapes we’re going to be in, knowing we’re not going to have the ball for long spells, be patient, make sure we press at the right time, all that kind of thing, so a good week of training and I’m sure we’ll be ready.”
