Matchday Preview: Tamworth vs Altrincham

Back at home in the league

Enterprise National League – The Lamb Ground

TICKETS HERE

Tamworth return to the Altair Group Community Stadium tomorrow evening as The Lambs host Altrincham in an important Enterprise National League clash.

Andy Peaks’ side will be targeting that elusive victory after six league matches without three points. Four consecutive draws have left Tamworth on the wrong side of fine margins, something the manager has spoken openly about in recent weeks.

Despite the winless run, Tamworth remain 13th in the table — twelve points off the play-offs and nine clear of Braintree Town FC in the final relegation position.

Altrincham FC arrive sitting 15th. It has been a challenging campaign for The Robins, who have lost 18 of their 33 fixtures, but recent form suggests signs of revival. They are unbeaten in four of their last six matches, collecting three victories in that spell.

With testing fixtures against top-half opposition ahead for both sides, this presents a valuable opportunity to build momentum heading into the final stretch of the season.

Head-to-Head

Tamworth and Altrincham first met in 2005 in the FA Cup Fourth Qualifying Round, where The Lambs secured a 3–1 victory — the first of six wins in 16 meetings between the sides. The Robins have won five of those encounters.

Altrincham claimed the last meeting at the Altair Group Community Stadium, earning a 2–1 victory during Tamworth’s first season back at Step One, courtesy of goals from Alex Newby and Justin Amaluzor.

Encouragingly for supporters, both teams have scored in each of the last five meetings, suggesting there should be goals at The Lamb tomorrow evening.

In the reverse fixture in October, Tamworth secured a 2–1 win in Hale. Late goals from Kennedy Digie and Alfie Bates sealed all three points after Lewis Banks had given the hosts the lead. Despite registering just 36% possession, Tamworth were clinical when it mattered — something they will be keen to rediscover after recent struggles in front of goal.

A victory would secure a first league double over Altrincham since 2017, when The Lambs won both fixtures 2–1 in National League North.

Recent Form

Altrincham looked set to be drawn into a relegation battle after a seven-match winless run stretching from December into late January. That sequence ended with an impressive 3–1 victory over play-off chasing Boreham Wood, with goals from Olly Crankshaw, Otis Khan and Jake Cooper.

That result sparked a run of ten points from six matches under Neil Gibson, lifting The Robins seven points clear of danger. They now sit two points behind Tamworth and fifteen adrift of Southend United in the final play-off position.

Like The Lambs, their season could still swing either way. A strong finish could ignite a late surge up the table, while a dip in form could drag them back into trouble — underlining the importance of tomorrow’s fixture.

One to Watch

Forward Jimmy Knowles has been Altrincham’s standout performer this season. The 24-year-old signed from Accrington Stanley last summer following a loan spell with Boston United.

Knowles has eight league goals in 32 appearances this campaign and 13 goal contributions overall — accounting for 34% of Altrincham’s goals. Across his career, he has scored 18 goals in 77 National League appearances and 21 in 57 National League North games, highlighting his pedigree at this level.

Containing Knowles will be key if Tamworth are to secure their first league win since early January.

Andy Peaks’ Pre-Match Thoughts

On the point at Boston:
“Last Saturday was a pleasing performance away at Boston United, especially considering they had been unbeaten in five matches beforehand. Defensively I thought we were solid and limited a side that has been scoring plenty of goals recently. It was certainly a point gained, but we lacked quality in the final third and we need to create more chances in the coming matches.”

On the National League Cup semi-final defeat:
“Our last home game, the National League Cup semi-final defeat against West Ham United PL2, was disappointing in terms of the result. The game ultimately turned on the missed penalty, which was frustrating. We’ve missed too many this season and that’s something we must improve. The performance levels were good against a strong side, and we stood up to the test, but the outcome was disappointing.”

On the importance of the supporters:
“It’s important we collect points here at The Lamb in front of our supporters. The atmosphere against West Ham was excellent and we want that again. It’s a two-way street – we have to excite you with our performances, but your support drives the players on. We want to make this stadium an intimidating place to come, and together we can turn it into one. With fourteen games remaining, we are determined to win matches, and you will all play your part in that.”

Tamworth FC is also proud to support the upcoming Match of the Dames initiative when The Lambs host Altrincham FC.

Backed by Birmingham County Football Association and launched in collaboration with Altrincham, Match of the Dames is a celebration of the women who are part of the football community — whether as supporters, volunteers, players, or first-time fans.

The initiative transforms matchday into a welcoming and memorable female-friendly experience, with a clear mission: to encourage more women to attend non-league football. As part of a wider national campaign, Match of the Dames aims to introduce 20 new female supporters to 20 National League fixtures this season.

For this fixture, 20 local women who have never attended a game — or who haven’t been in a while — are being invited to experience matchday at The Lamb Ground, with tickets provided free of charge.
