Matchday Preview: Tamworth FC vs Aldershot Town

Tamworth FC13 Feb - 16:11

Back to The Lamb

Tamworth FC return to action at the The Lamb Ground this Saturday as they host Aldershot Town in the Enterprise National League.

Andy Peaks’ side will be targeting a return to winning league form, having not recorded a victory since the 3-1 success over Gateshead in early January. With around a quarter of the campaign remaining, the margins are tight — and every point matters.

Looking to Build Momentum

On Tuesday evening, The Lambs earned a hard-fought 2-2 draw away at Morecambe FC.

Close-range finishes from Jordan Cullinane-Liburd and Oli Lynch cancelled out the hosts’ goals in each half, ensuring Tamworth returned from Lancashire with a valuable point.

It was also the first time Tamworth have scored twice in a match since the 3-0 National League Cup victory over Manchester United U21s in mid-December — a positive sign as the run-in approaches.

The aim now is clear: turn steady performances and encouraging draws into wins.

Tamworth currently sit 12th in the table — eight points clear of the relegation zone but eleven points behind FC Halifax Town in the final play-off position. The division remains tightly packed, and a strong run of results could quickly shift the outlook.

Head-to-Head

Meetings between Tamworth and Aldershot Town date back to October 2003, when the sides played out a 3-3 draw at The Lamb.

Tamworth’s first victory in the fixture arrived in August 2005 with a 2-0 success at The Recreation Ground — also their first clean sheet against the Hampshire side.

Across 16 meetings overall:
• 6 Tamworth wins
• 4 draws
• 6 Aldershot wins
• 4 Tamworth home victories

More recently, the August 2024 win at The Lamb marked Tamworth’s first Step One home victory since 2014.

In the three National League meetings since promotion, The Lambs have scored seven goals against Aldershot, winning twice and drawing once.

The reverse fixture in October produced a dramatic late turnaround. After Kwame Thomas gave Aldershot the lead, stoppage-time strikes in each half from Haydn Hollis and Beck-Ray Enoru secured all three points for Tamworth.

Aldershot Town – Recent Form

Since appointing John Coleman in October, Aldershot have climbed out of the relegation zone and now sit 19th.

They arrive in strong form:
• Three consecutive league wins
• Just one defeat in their last eight league matches
• Ten goals scored across their last three games

League position offers little comfort — this will be a competitive encounter against a side gathering momentum at a crucial stage of the season.

One to Watch – Ryan Hill

New captain Ryan Hill is likely to be a key figure this weekend.

The versatile midfielder-defender has contributed seven goals and three assists in 27 league appearances this season, with three goals in his last seven outings.

With nearly 200 Step One appearances, Hill’s leadership and attacking contribution have been central to Aldershot’s recent improvement.

Andy Peaks – Pre-Match Thoughts

On the draw with Hartlepool:

“It was really frustrating. I thought we were really good, set a good tempo and created the best chances in the first half. The penalty decision was a key moment because if that goal stands, it changes the dynamic of the game.

The character the lads showed to bounce back was excellent.”

On Tuesday’s draw at Morecambe:

“At half-time we were disappointed because we were nowhere near our level, yet we were still in the game. In the second half we were much better.

If the penalty on Tyler Roberts is given and we score, it becomes a fantastic away night.”

On recent performances:

“Since that day at Solihull, our performances have been really good. We just haven’t picked up the points we deserve.

Once we get a win, we’ve shown before we can put two or three together.”

On the need for more goals:

“We haven’t scored as many as we’d like, but injuries to players like Dan Creaney and Tom McGlinchey have affected that.

We’ve been competitive in most games — it’s been fine margins. Now we need to come out on the right side of them.”
