Matchday Preview – Wealdstone vs Tamworth

Tamworth FC19 Jan - 15:34

Midweek trip to Middlesex

Tamworth return to Enterprise National League action this Wednesday, as they travel to Grosvenor Vale to face Sam Cox’s Wealdstone, marking a second consecutive away fixture for The Lambs. Andy Peaks’ side will be looking to maintain their unbeaten start to 2026 and convert resilience into three valuable points.

The Lambs will, however, be keen to return to winning ways following Saturday’s goalless draw away at Truro City. Despite registering thirteen shots, Tamworth were unable to find the breakthrough against The Tinners, who were reduced to ten men late on after Will Dean was shown a red card.

Head-to-Head

Tamworth and Wealdstone have only faced each other competitively since both clubs have been competing concurrently in the Enterprise National League, plus a home victory for The Lambs in the FA cup qualifying in 1987, with their first meeting of the National League coming last season. There have been three competitive league encounters between the sides, with Tamworth winning two and one ending in a draw. The most recent meeting took place at the Altair Group Community Stadium in September, where a Kennedy
Digie header cancelled out Nathan Tshikuna’s second-half opener, preserving Tamworth’s record of never losing to Wealdstone. Assisted by Tyler Roberts, Digie’s goal was his second during a prolific run which saw the defender score four goals in five league matches.
The result formed part of a seven-match unbeaten run stretching from mid-September to the end of October, before Tamworth were eventually defeated by Boston United, with Kieran Donnelly scoring twice in a 3-1 win at The Lamb.

The last time these sides met at Grosvenor Vale, was their first encounter in Ruislip, when Beck-Ray Enoru’s first goal of the 2024/25 season secured a 1-0 victory for Andy Peaks’ side in February last year. The result helped Tamworth bounce back from a home defeat to Barnet three days earlier.

With both sides sitting on 35 points, Peaks will be hoping Tamworth’s unbeaten record against The Stones provides a psychological edge. Victory on Wednesday night would see The Lambs leapfrog their opponents and could move them as high as 11th in the table.

Current Form

Wealdstone come into the contest following a 1-0 home victory over Woking on Saturday, with a Deon Woodman header sealing a first Enterprise National League win in nine matches for Sam Cox’s side. The Stones have scored only two goals in their last four league games and endured a difficult December in terms of results.
However, recent performances suggest signs of recovery. Since the turn of the year, Wealdstone have won two of their last three matches in all competitions, including a 1-0 Isuzu FA Trophy victory over Dagenham & Redbridge, courtesy of Micah Obiero. In a league where momentum can shift quickly, Cox will be hoping recent results can spark a climb up the table.

Tamworth remain firmly in the mid-table pack, despite picking up only one win in their last four league matches. Whilst unbeaten in 2026, The Lambs have not scored more than once in a game since their 2-1 away win over Boreham Wood in mid-December. Peaks will be eager for his attacking unit to find greater cutting edge, particularly after last weekend’s stalemate in Cornwall.

Wealdstone’s One-to-Watch

Off the back of a Man of the Match display last Saturday, Tamworth will be well aware of Wealdstone centre-half Deon Woodman as one of The Stones’ standout performers. The 23-year-old, who signed permanently in July 2024, was a commanding presence at the back during Wealdstone’s 1-0 victory over Woking, helping secure a clean sheet before scoring the winning goal with a powerful header from Anthony Georgiou’s corner.

Woodman has been involved in five of Wealdstone’s National League clean sheets this season and will be aiming to help The Stones keep Tamworth at bay as they look to record a third consecutive clean sheet in all competitions.

Sam Cox’s Saturday Assessment

Speaking after Saturday’s win over Woking, Wealdstone manager Sam Cox highlighted the importance of the result and praised his sides defensive resolve.

“We showed real grit… I think the fans appreciate that.”

Cox also pointed to improvements in game management, with two consecutive clean sheets representing progress after costly errors over the Christmas period. Looking ahead to Tamworth, he identified the last two matches as a benchmark and will want to maintain that intensity in their next couple of matches as Wealdstone look to climb the table.

Andy Peaks’ Truro Post-Match Comments

Following the draw at Truro, Tamworth boss Andy Peaks felt his side could have taken three points…
“At the end of the day it was a game we could have won… for me it’s another point on the board, it’s a long, long trip, very different to what we’re used to… but it’s nice to come away with a point – could have possibly been three.”

On his early substitutions, Peaks explained…
“Ollie came off very early after taking a whack, and Ben Acquaye was struggling with a dead leg. He’s played a lot of minutes this week, so it was precautionary. It also gave Brandon minutes, which was a positive – I thought he was bright.”

Regarding the 122 Lambs who travelled to Truro…
“Even the lads have asked me to mention it – they were fantastic. For that many to come this far speaks volumes. We’re disappointed we couldn’t get a winner for them, but the reception afterwards showed they appreciated the effort. On another day, we score.”

And Wealdstone on Wednesday…
“Another tough place to go. Everywhere in this league is tough – it’s another battle. We’ll go there full of optimism and determination… and try and get some points on the board.”
