Matchday Preview - Tamworth vs Sutton United

Tamworth FC22 Jan - 10:45

First of 5 home games in a row...

After Wednesday’s scheduled fixture away at Wealdstone FC was postponed due to persistent rainfall in Ruislip, Tamworth return to the Altair Group Community Stadium this Saturday as they host Sutton United in the Enterprise National League.

The objective for The Lambs remains unchanged from ahead of the postponed Wealdstone fixture: a return to winning ways following last weekend’s goalless draw away at Truro City. That fixture represented Tamworth’s longest away trip of the season, with 122 supporters completing the 542-mile round trip — backing that did not go unnoticed.

Andy Peaks has the opportunity to guide Tamworth to a first league double over Sutton United, following victory at Gander Green Lane earlier in the campaign. On that occasion, The Lambs emerged as 3-2 winners in a contest which saw all five goals scored before half-time.

Joe Riley and Tyler Roberts put Tamworth two goals ahead, before a Lewis Simper brace restored parity for The U’s. However, a minute later, Manny Duku’s fourth National League goal of the season proved decisive, sealing a fourth league victory of the campaign.

Current Form

Tamworth will be targeting a more consistent return to winning form. The Lambs have picked up one win in their last four league matches, though they remain unbeaten in 2026.

The additional preparation time ahead of Saturday’s fixture could prove useful on the training ground, particularly in attacking areas. Tamworth have not scored more than once in a match since the 2-1 victory away at Boreham Wood in mid-December. While the defensive solidity has been encouraging, an improved goalscoring return would significantly aid a push towards the 52-point mark and National League survival.

Saturday’s match also begins a run of Enterprise National League fixtures against sides currently hovering around the relegation zone. This sequence of games could play a pivotal role in determining whether The Lambs can establish themselves firmly in the mid-table pack.

Sutton United arrive in the West Midlands without a win in their last seven matches in all competitions, a run stretching back to the end of November. However, recent results do not tell the full story, with Sutton facing four teams from the current top ten in their last five league fixtures.

Sutton currently occupy the final relegation position but have two games in hand on Braintree Town and sit just one point behind. A positive run of results before the end of January could dramatically alter their outlook.

Head-to-Head

Across four meetings between the sides, Tamworth have recorded two victories and one draw, with both wins coming away from home.

The first came in The Lambs’ return to Step One football last season, when a Tom McGlinchey brace secured a 2-1 comeback victory shortly before Christmas.

Tamworth remain unbeaten against Sutton United in the Enterprise National League. The only defeat under Andy Peaks came in the FA Trophy Fourth Round last January, when Will Davies’ second-half strike sent Sutton through.

That defeat denied Tamworth a first FA Trophy Fifth Round appearance since 2004 — a milestone The Lambs would rectify this season following a dramatic 7-6 penalty shootout victory over Rochdale after a 1-1 draw.

Sutton United – One to Watch

Tamworth will need to pay close attention to Lewis Simper.

The Sutton United midfielder signed in summer 2024 and has been a standout performer this season, contributing eight goals and three assists in the Enterprise National League. A versatile player capable of operating centrally, wide or in advanced roles, Simper combines creativity with a strong goalscoring threat.

Two of his goals came against Tamworth earlier this season, and his contributions have directly earned Sutton six additional points — underlining the threat he poses once again.

Andy Peaks – Pre-Match Comments

Andy Peaks reiterated that his priority remains securing Tamworth’s National League status:

“For me my priority is ensuring we remain in this league, and the Truro draw means we have collected another point. Everything above 52 points is a bonus.”

Looking ahead to Sutton United, Peaks expects a competitive contest:

“We look forward to Saturday and Sutton will be keen to gain points as they look to move away from the relegation zone. They achieved a very good result last Saturday and, like us, will have had no midweek action.”

On squad availability, Peaks added:

“With the game being called off, we are able to train Thursday evening and it’s given some players a chance to recover from knocks. Oli Lynch will be fit to play, Ben Milnes is likely to be available again, but Joe Riley and Tom McGlinchey are still a few weeks away.”

Finally, on recruitment:

“I am still on the hunt for a striker after Becs and Manny left for new clubs. I was pleased they both had successful debuts last weekend.”
