We welcome AFC Fylde to our ground on Saturday for our final home game of the season. Although Fylde have already been relegated, we’re expecting a tough test. Like Banbury last season, they’ll come with a point to prove. While we’ve generally had a strong home record, we know we’ll need to be at our best to secure a positive result and give our fans something to celebrate.
I’m also pleased that the date has been confirmed for the Birmingham Senior Cup Final. It’s a fantastic opportunity to finish the season with more silverware and give the fans another memorable day. I went to watch the semi-final between Racing Club Warwick and Burton Albion, and Burton looked strong, so we’re expecting a competitive final.
Over the Easter weekend, I was disappointed with the two defeats — particularly the loss to Solihull Moors. On reflection, we didn’t play badly in either game and created numerous chances, but poor decisions at the back cost us. As good as our season has been, we’ve come up short twice against Solihull in matches where we could, and probably should, have taken points. We led at half-time, but in the second half, despite creating opportunities, they defended their box better than we did. The stats show we had far more shots and entries into the final third, but conceding two goals from set pieces just isn’t good enough. Normally, we pride ourselves on being strong in both boxes — that wasn’t the case on Friday.
At Forest Green, we had some positive spells, but defensively we weren’t good enough. Conceding three goals in a 15-minute period proved costly. Despite having 25 shots, we didn’t test their keeper nearly enough. You can’t afford to concede three goals like that and expect to come away with anything. That said, I thought the lads showed real resilience in the second half, and we need to learn from these experiences.
This season is still a work in progress, and I want us to finish as high as possible. But it’s crucial we take lessons from defeats like the one at Forest Green. If we can put those lessons into practice next season, it’ll only make us stronger.
We had to make some changes at Forest Green, with Ben Crompton nursing a sore ankle and Tom McGlinchey unwell. I’m hopeful both of them, along with Callum Cockerill-Mollett, will be available for Saturday. Ben Milnes won’t be ready in time, but it was great to see Jordan Cullinane-Liburd get some minutes on Monday.
