Tom Handley was pleased with his opportunity to return to the starting lineup on Wednesday night, but expressed his disappointment at the nature of Tamworth’s defeat to Middlesbrough PL2 in the National League Cup.

Riccardo Calder’s goal led the Lambs into the break before three goals in six minutes saw the visitors turn the game around to win 3-1.

Handley said: “Disappointment. I know it’s a cliché to say but it’s a tale of two halves.
“First half, looked comfortable, dealt with them quite well, playing balls in behind, seemed like we were on top, and then second half was a three-minute spell. That’s probably been the story of our season so far. Carbon copy of three goals. That’s something we’ve got to look at in the changing room, look back and reflect.”

Discussing the goals and the mentality around the squad, Handley said: “Without looking back at the goals I can’t comment too much on them, but from what it looked like it was similar goals in terms of balls across the box. Again, it’s a spell [in the] second half, a three-minute period.

“The first goal goes in, it’s got to be something we look at collectively as a team, whether or not we put balls in behind for the next five minutes and putting pressure back on. We just collapsed after that first goal, heads gone down a little bit, and the mindset has got to be better from the team.”

Handley returned to the lineup for the first time since the previous National League Cup match which saw Tamworth win 5-3 against Newcastle United.

He said: “It’s always difficult when you haven’t played in a while to come into the side. Nights like these are perfect for players that haven’t played in a while to get that opportunity to get onto the pitch and showcase what you’re about. Also, it’s an opportunity to put some wins together and get that camaraderie in the team together. Personal note, it’s nice to get 90 minutes under my belt and showcase a little bit of what I can do. Hopefully I kick on from here.”

There were 411 supporters in attendance on Tuesday night, with Handley encouraging the fans to keep getting behind the players ahead of the trip to Harrogate on Saturday.

“I appreciate every single fan that’s come out. It means a lot to the team, and we need that support behind us if we’re going to achieve anything this season. I know they’re disappointed with the result and we couldn’t repay them, but hopefully they can come out in their numbers again, travel up to Harrogate, and it’s always appreciated.”
