TAMWORTH FC – FA CUP REWIND

The Lambs have a strong history in the FA Cup, particularly in recent years. Here’s a look at some of the most memorable FA Cup moments for Tamworth Football Club.

2025/26: Tamworth battle with the O’s

Tamworth’s most recent FA Cup match was hosted at the H.D. Ricketts Community Stadium as they welcomed League One Leyton Orient to Staffordshire.
It was a narrow defeat at home to the O’s at the Lamb Ground in Tamworth’s most recent FA Cup match. An attendance of 2,820 watched on as Manny Duku’s finish inside one minute was ruled out for offside, one of many chances as the Lambs threatened in the first half.

However, despite the solid defending, Orient made a breakthrough in the 79th minute as Kennedy Digie’s guided a header into the corner of his own net and the Lambs went behind.

2024/25: Tamworth take on Tottenham

Tamworth famously reached the Third Round Proper in 2025, equalling their best ever run in the competition.
Two rounds earlier, more than 3,500 people watched on as Tamworth eliminated League One side Huddersfield Town out of the Emirates FA Cup.

The Terriers were 57 places above Tamworth, but went behind in the 44th minute as Tom Tonks launched a long throw into the box and it resulted in Chris Maxwell fumbling the ball into his own net.

The Lambs comfortably saw off the rest of the game and advanced to the Second Round to face a local tie away at Burton Albion. After winning a close game on penalties, a memorable day at the Lamb Ground saw Tamworth host Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur.

Tamworth had several chances in the game, including an effort to test Spurs goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky after just thirty seconds. Despite battling for 90 minutes, the tie went to extra time, with the scores locked together at 0-0. The the fitness levels became apparent and Tottenham advanced through to the Fourth Round with a 3-0 win.

2013/14: A match with the Robins (twice)

Between 2014 and 2024, the Lambs had a lengthy spell of being eliminated in the Qualifying rounds of the competition. However, in 2013, they reached the First Round to face Cheltenham Town, nicknamed the Robins.
Tamworth were in the fifth tier in 2013-14 when they eliminated League Two Cheltenham Town.

An assist from Justin Richards saw Nick Chadwick’s right-footed effort beat Scott Brown in the Cheltenham net. The Lambs almost doubled their lead in the second half, and held on to secure victory and setup a home tie with Bristol City in the Second Round proper.

Despite fighting valiantly against City, who were also nicknamed the Robins, they fell to a 2-1 defeat and were eliminated.

2011/12: A trip to Goodison
The Lambs fans had a memorable period in the FA Cup in 2012 as they reached the Third Round Proper once again.
After beating Hinckley United in a replay, followed by a trip up north to Gateshead where they secured a 2-1 victory, it was a journey on the road to Merseyside in the Third Round as they faced Everton.
A battling Tamworth were narrowly outfought as efforts from Johnny Heitinga and Leighton Baines secured victory for the Toffees.

2010/11: The last match at Carlisle

Tamworth have previously faced Carlisle United in the FA Cup at Brunton Park. On this occasion in 2010, the Lambs had reached the Second Round Proper, and went out to a narrow 3-2 defeat on the road.
Tom Marshall was the one to open the scoring for the Lambs and went in front again through Danny Thomas after a Carlisle equaliser. However, two quick goals in the final five minutes secured victory for the Cumbrians.

2006/07: Hosting Norwich

The Proper Rounds of the 06/07 FA Cup saw Tamworth rewarded with back-to-back away ties. One at Burton Albion, whom they saw off with a 2-1 victory, and then went on to inflict the same scoreline on Rushden & Diamonds.
The victory set them up with a home tie at Norwich City, where anticipation was in the air. Dion Dublin was among the names on the scoresheet for the Canaries and Norwich ran out 4-1 victors, but it was Kyle Storer who gave the Lambs fans something to shout about as a stunning strike flew into the bottom corner on the 68th minute.

2005/06: A replay with Stoke

21 years ago was when Tamworth reached the Third Round Proper for the first time ever. And after beating AFC Bournemouth and Hartlepool in the previous two rounds were anything to go by, the spirits of the Lambs fans were high.

Tamworth were drawn away to fellow Staffordshire side Stoke City, who were then in the Championship. The Lambs held Stoke to a goalless draw and forced a replay at home the following week.

It looks as if the ultimate upset would be on as Nathan Jackson netted for the Lambs in the 42nd minute, but Paul Gallagher’s equaliser for Potters meant extra time was in order. Then, with the scores still level, it was down to the lottery of penalties, where the visitors triumphed.

Current manager Andy Peaks acknowledges the history of the FA Cup around Tamworth, particularly in recent years, but understands the true test ahead of his side as they look to make yet more history in the competition.

He said: “It’s the FA Cup. We love the FA Cup. We’ve had a fantastic few years in it, and we’ve had a particularly tough draw this year away from home and at such a long distance. I’m sure some will make the trip, and rest assured we’ll be trying because we love the competition. It’s probably as tough a game as we could’ve got both geographically and the team we’re up against, but that’s football. We’ll go there on the back of some decent performances, and hopefully some of the fans will follow up and get behind the boys.”
