Eyes on the Finish Line: Big Games, Big Moments

Tamworth look to finish strong as local rivals come to town

We’ve reached the final four games of the season, and on Friday we welcome Solihull Moors to The Lamb. Looking back at the reverse fixture during the Christmas period, I felt it was one of our poorest performances of the season — we simply weren’t at our best. I’m expecting a much stronger display this time around. I go into every game with the desire to win and increase our points total as we look to finish the season as strongly as possible.

That said, Solihull come into the match on the back of a solid win at Southend last weekend, so they’ll be feeling confident. It’s a local derby, so we know it’ll be a tough, hard-fought game. But with a big crowd behind us, I’m sure the boys will be fired up and ready to put on a performance for everyone in attendance.

Reflecting on last Saturday’s 4-2 win over Braintree Town, I was obviously delighted with the three points. Although we went in ahead at the break, I was disappointed with parts of our play in the first half. We knew Braintree had real pace and could break quickly, but also that they were vulnerable. Defensively, we weren’t good enough early on — it could easily have been 5-5 at halftime!

Thankfully, we tightened things up in the second half and looked more composed. We still looked a threat going forward and, although we only added one more goal from Dan, I thought we might have had more. What pleased me most was that all four front players got on the scoresheet. It really showed how well they played, especially considering someone of Danny Waldron’s quality couldn’t even get on the pitch that day.

We’ve been scoring freely in recent games, and I think that shows the belief this squad has. We keep saying: get the ball in the box, and chances will come. Becs brings us tremendous energy, Tom’s an intelligent player, Dan gives us everything, and Ponts has waited patiently, took his goal brilliantly, and created a lot in the number 10 role. As a front four, they were outstanding on Saturday.

On Tuesday night, I went to watch the Birmingham Senior Cup semi-final between Racing Club Warwick and Burton Albion, which Burton won 4–3. That means we’ll now face Burton in the final. It’s really important that the date and venue for the final get confirmed quickly, especially with our Presentation Evening on 10th May. Hopefully, it will all be sorted in the coming days.

Burton fielded a young side in the semi-final, and I expect they’ll do the same in the final. They looked sharp, passed the ball well, and will definitely present a challenge. But no matter who we face, we’ll be ready for a tough test — and a shot at ending this incredible season with silverware.
