A goal in stoppage time of the first half, as well as the 57th minute, from Donnelly gave Tamworth the lead on two separate occasions, before Ben Milnes’ penalty deep into stoppage time levelled the scoring once again.

He said: “Delighted to be back.

“I thought we looked good pre-season. We’ve got a good squad, and we’ve all been chomping at the bit to get back. We knew this was going to be a tough game, first game of the season, but that shows everything about the National League.”

Boreham Wood narrowly missed out on promotion to the EFL last season, losing to Rochdale in the playoff final at Wembley, something which was not lost on Donnelly, but he was able to help the goals build his confidence.

He said: “For me, I think, coming to a team like Boreham Wood, it’s going to be a tough graft, but at the same time, I back this team, I back myself, and today I feel like I had that freedom to go and express myself. I’m on my own up there at the start, but delighted to get a goal and that will definitely help my confidence.”

The new set of players is something for Andy Peaks, and Tamworth, to get used to as well, but Donnelly explained how well everyone is settling in.

He said: “We’ve got a lot of new players, me being one of them, but the changing room’s looking good. I think there’s a good difference of ages. That’s obviously a big thing, they’re helping us all gel, and understand what Tamworth’s all about.

“Today we showed the massive graft, and I know the lads have put a lot of running numbers on today, so it just shows what the club’s about. We’re not just here to be a number in this league, we’re going to push as far as we can.”
