Manager Andy Peaks reflected on the final pre-season game away at AFC Telford United on Saturday afternoon as the Lambs secured a 3-1 victory on the road.

Three different goalscorers were on the scoresheet as Tamworth rounded off their campaign, and Peaks was pleased with the performance.

He said: "I thought it was quite a good performance in general.

“Good place to come and play football. They’ve had some good results themselves in pre-season. There’ll be up there, in a similar sense to Macclesfield, they’ll be up there next year. It was all a really good test. I thought we played some good stuff, defended a lot better.

"Again, it’s pre-season. There’s still massive improvements we can make in certain areas and make certain decisions, but, overall I thought it was a good way to finish the pre-season games.”

Jake Hutchinson’s strike, that took a heavy deflection into the net, opened the scoring before half time, followed by goals from Teo Kurtaran and Tom McGlinchey that solidified the result in the second half.

Peaks was pleased with the goals coming from different places within the squad.

He said: “It’s nice to score from different players.

“It’s a confidence thing, nice for Glinch [Tom McGlinchey] to get one, he hasn’t got one for a little while, so that was good. We’re not bothered who scores, it’s not about that. Individually, it is, because they want to score goals. That was quite good. Same for Hutch [Jake Hutchinson] really. I haven’t watched the video back, but I’m happy to give it to him. His work rate was good, he deserved that.”

Another thing that Peaks had to contend with this season was a large changeover of players and having to rebuild the squad. He stressed the importance, however, of not reading too much into pre-season.

He said: “For me, as a manager, you’ve got a lot of players, we’ve had quite a changeover this year for various reasons, you’ve got to give people minutes, so there’s not a lot of consistency with the team, the shapes, and whatever, so you have to take what you can out of it.

“Never look too much into results in pre-season, because both as a manager and player I’ve had seasons when I’ve had a really good pre-season and then can’t win a [league] game and vice versa. I’m more about performances, it’s more about lads gelling. I won’t over-stress about individual games, I’ll start looking after 10-12 league games, see where we’re at, see where we can get better and how well we’re doing. Pre-season, for me, can be very, very false.”

The Lambs begin their National League campaign on the road to Boreham Wood on Saturday 8th August. The Wood narrowly missed out on promotion last season, but Peaks is anticipating the challenge.

He said: “Looking forward to the season. Pre-season is what it is, a lot of new players gelling. I think we’ll get better as the season goes on, because that is always the case with us.

“You couldn’t ask for a more difficult start, the team that lost in the final, could’ve got there. Good players, a good team, it was really tough against them last year, so it’s a tough start, but you’ve got to play everyone.”
